Hinge 2026: how it works, what it costs, who it suits
Hinge is Match Group's prompt-based dating app. Every match starts with a like or a comment on one specific part of someone's profile, and free accounts get a small daily allowance of likes. People call it the serious one, and the company says much the same. We found nothing that measures whether that is true.

Hinge only exists as a phone app. Match Group calls it mobile-only, so you get the iOS and Android apps and no browser version (Match Group Form 10-K, 2026). We did not use the app for this page. We looked at its store listings, Hinge’s own announcements and Match Group’s filings.
How it works
On Hinge you match by reacting to one specific thing on someone’s profile. A profile is a set of photos plus prompts, which are short questions you pick and answer in text or as a voice recording, and Hinge says that since July 2026 friends can answer some prompts about you too. To show interest, you like or comment on a single photo, prompt answer or voice prompt, not on the profile as a whole (App Store, 2026). A comment works as an opening line, and it comes attached to the thing it is about. What to write in it, with examples by prompt type, is on Hinge openers. How to answer prompts so that people reply is in our guide to Hinge prompts.
Likes are rationed. Free accounts get eight likes a day, which Hinge’s own mission page states; its help center would not load for us (Hinge, 2026b). Eight is enough to be picky and not enough to be careless. Whether that feels like a filter or a sales pitch depends on how your week is going.
Once a day, Hinge also suggests one person it calls Most Compatible. The feature launched on July 11, 2018. According to TechCrunch’s report at launch, it is based on the Gale-Shapley algorithm, a textbook method for pairing two groups by how each side ranks the other. At launch, Hinge said these matches were eight times more likely to lead to exchanged phone numbers (TechCrunch, 2018). We found no published method behind that figure, so it stays Hinge’s claim.
The rule that shapes behavior most is Your Turn Limits. A conversation is “your turn” when the other person wrote last and is waiting on you. Once eight or more threads are waiting on you, you can neither send nor receive new likes, and so get no new matches, until you answer or end some of them. Hinge tested the rule from May 14, 2024 and rolled it out globally on September 18, 2024. It is a direct brake on ghosting, which means going silent on someone instead of telling them it is over. Hinge says responsiveness rose 20%. It also says first messages answered within 24 hours were 72% more likely to lead to a date (Hinge, 2024a; Hinge, 2024b). Both numbers come from Hinge, and it has not published a method for either.
Two later features sit on top of that. Hidden Words, launched April 24, 2024, let you filter chosen words, phrases or emojis out of comments sent with likes. In March 2025 it became Comment Filter, which keeps the custom list and adds an automatic filter option (Hinge, 2024c, updated 2025). Signals, announced June 1, 2026 and presented to Swedish media on August 26, 2026, is a badge for members who, among other things, reply to messages and confirm dates. You need a verified selfie to get it (Hinge, 2026; Dagens PS, 2026).
We found no read receipts on Hinge. What Hinge, Bumble and Tinder let a match see, from typing dots to activity status, is on dating app read receipts.
What it costs
Hinge is free to download, and the free version runs on the daily like allowance; how the free tiers of Hinge, Tinder and Bumble compare is in our best free dating apps guide. The paid tiers are Hinge+ and, in the Swedish store, HingeX. There are also add-ons you buy separately. These are the App Store list prices on October 4, 2026 (App Store, 2026).
| Item | Sweden (kr) | US ($) |
|---|---|---|
| Hinge+ | 179, 299, 329 | 16.99, 19.99 |
| HingeX | 549 | not listed |
| “Hinge Subscription” | not listed | 14.99, 29.99, 34.99 |
| Membership | not listed | 19.99 |
| 3 Roses | 79 | 9.99 |
| 12 Roses | not listed | 29.99 |
| Boost | 79 | 9.99, 19.99 |
The store does not label the billing periods, so we do not quote a monthly price. Prices vary by plan length and may also vary by location or promotion.
For Hinge+, the listing lists unlimited likes, seeing who has liked you, and advanced preferences. HingeX adds priority likes and “enhanced recommendations”, according to the Swedish listing. From the US list alone, we could not tell how “Hinge Subscription” and Membership differ from Hinge+. Roses and Boost are separate purchases and are not part of a subscription.
No source we found measures whether paying on Hinge pays off. Across all apps, Pew found that 35% of US online daters had ever paid for a dating site or app. Those who paid were slightly more positive about the experience, 58% against 50% (Pew Research Center, 2023). Those figures cover online dating in general, not Hinge in particular. One more check: Tinder has paid to settle an age-pricing case, and we found nothing similar for Hinge.
Who it suits, and who it does not
Hinge suits people who would rather send a sentence than a swipe. It helps if you like having something specific to reply to, and if eight likes a day is enough for you or you are willing to pay for more.
Where you live matters too. Match Group describes Hinge’s markets as English-speaking countries plus a growing set of others (Match Group Form 10-K, 2026). In Pew’s US survey, 19% of online daters had ever used Hinge, compared with 46% for Tinder and 28% for Bumble. Among online daters aged 18 to 29, the Hinge figure was 39% (Pew Research Center, 2023). Those figures measure whether people have ever used an app, not whether they want a relationship. In the second quarter of 2026, Match Group reported that Hinge’s monthly active users were up 13% year over year. Hinge’s revenue in its European expansion markets was up 86% (Match Group, 2026). Hinge has had a Swedish interface since its Swedish launch in November 2022 (TechRadar Sverige, 2022). We found no Swedish user number, though, so we cannot tell you how many people use it in your city. Our guide to dating apps in Sweden covers the local options.
The serious reputation mostly comes from Hinge itself. Its slogan is “Designed to be Deleted”, and Match Group describes it as focusing on “users with a higher level of intent” (Match Group Form 10-K, 2026). Both are company statements. We found no outcome data showing that Hinge users end up in relationships more often than anyone else.
It does not suit people who want volume, which is closer to what Tinder offers, or people who hate writing. A “hey” under a photo still uses up one of your eight likes. It also does not suit anyone who likes to keep a dozen chats on hold, because the app stops new likes, and with them new matches, once eight are waiting on you. If you are wondering which app is better for women, that question changed in August 2026, when Bumble dropped its rule that women send the first message, and our Hinge vs Bumble comparison sets the two side by side by use case.
Here is what the scores rest on. Serious is 4. Hinge states its intent, Your Turn Limits blocks new matches while you leave threads unanswered, and Signals rewards engagement, with replying one of five criteria. We found no independent data on what users want, the same gap as for Tinder and Bumble, so the 4 rests on product rules and company statements, not on user outcomes. Cost is 3: eight free likes a day is usable if you are patient, and Hinge+ starts at 179 kr. Pool is 3, and preliminary. Hinge is growing, with monthly active users up 13% (Match Group, 2026), but Google Play lists 10M+ installs for Hinge against 100M+ for Bumble and 500M+ for Tinder (Google Play, 2026), and no Swedish user number exists. Women is 3 and preliminary. Pew’s harassment figures are not broken down by app, so the score rests on features, mainly Comment Filter and the verified selfie behind Signals. Ghosting is 2. With eight open threads as the cap, leaving someone hanging costs you new matches.

Common questions
How does Hinge work without paying?
The free version lets you send a limited number of likes each day. Free accounts get eight likes a day, according to Hinge's own mission page and pages that quote its help center (Hinge, 2026b). Each like lands on one photo, prompt answer or voice prompt, with or without a comment. According to the store listing, Hinge+ adds unlimited likes and shows you who has already liked you.
How much does Hinge cost per month?
We cannot give you a reliable monthly figure. On October 4, 2026, the App Store listed Hinge+ from 179 kr in Sweden and from $16.99 in the US, with several price points per tier. It did not label the billing periods. The different prices probably reflect plan lengths, and may also vary by location or promotion, but the listing does not say. Check the price and the period in the app before you pay.
Is Hinge actually good for dating?
It is good at one thing: making each like say something specific. Comments on prompts, a daily like limit and a rule that blocks new matches when too many chats go unanswered all push toward actual conversations. Whether that leads to more relationships is not measured. 'Designed to be Deleted' is a slogan, and we found no outcome data behind it. It also depends on how many people use it near you.
What are the negatives of Hinge?
The free tier is tight at eight likes a day. The App Store does not label billing periods, which makes the prices hard to compare. We found no Swedish user numbers, so the size of the local pool is unknown. The format rewards people who like writing and does little for people who do not. And the serious reputation rests mostly on the company's own description of itself.
Is 40 too old for Hinge?
We cannot answer that with Hinge numbers. Hinge publishes no age breakdown of its users. Pew's 39% for online daters aged 18 to 29 measures who has ever used Hinge, not who is active now, and says nothing about people in their 40s (Pew Research Center, 2023). Whether the pool thins with age on Hinge, we found no figure. The quickest test is to open it in your city and see who shows up.
