Does Hinge have read receipts? What Hinge, Bumble and Tinder show
We found no read receipts on Hinge, and Bumble says it shows none. Tinder sold them one chat at a time until January 7, 2026, when its help pages say the feature ended. Feeld shows them free. Here is what each app lets the other person see, with a source or a gap per cell, as of October 5, 2026.
A read receipt is the marker that tells a sender their message has been opened. That is all it says. It does not say a reply is coming, or why one has not. Researchers who studied Facebook Messenger describe three states a message can be in: “(1) sent to the service, (2) delivered to the recipient’s device, and (3) read by the recipient” (Hoyle et al., 2017). Dating apps differ on how many of those they show you.
As of October 5, 2026, we found no read receipts on Hinge, and Bumble says it shows none. Tinder sold them one chat at a time until January 7, 2026, when its help pages say the feature ended. Feeld shows them to every member, free. Jump to what each app shows.
We did not use the apps for this page. We looked at their help pages, App Store listings and press releases, and at third-party write-ups where the companies say nothing. The help centers of Hinge, Bumble and Tinder would not load for us, so their wording here is the page text a search index returned for each page, linked in the sources. Each cell in the table names a source or says what we did not find.
Does Hinge have read receipts?
We found none, and nothing to switch off. As of October 5, 2026, the pages we read describe no read receipts on Hinge (SlashGear, 2025a; fotto.ai, 2026), and we found no Hinge page that lists one or a setting for them. We also found no statement from Hinge on why. SlashGear’s explainer of April 14, 2025 makes the same point: Hinge has given no official reason (SlashGear, 2025a). Some pages that rank for the question call it a deliberate, low-pressure choice. We found no Hinge source that says so, and “low-pressure” is the reason Bumble gives for Bumble.
What sits under a sent message is less settled. SlashGear says Hinge shows a “Sent” label and nothing more (SlashGear, 2025a). A fotto.ai post dated July 17, 2026 lists what is missing: “There is no ‘seen’, no blue tick, no ‘delivered’, and no typing indicator.” (fotto.ai, 2026). A chat-design teardown by CometChat, dated April 7, 2025, says the opposite on typing: you can see when the other person is typing (CometChat, 2025). The pages do not agree, none of them cites Hinge, and we could not confirm the label or the dots, so the table marks both as unconfirmed.
Hinge has a related signal. Your Turn launched in December 2017, and Global Dating Insights reported at the time that it reminds users when it is their turn to respond (Global Dating Insights, 2017). The later and stricter rule, Your Turn Limits, which some pages call “the 8 rule”, is explained on our Hinge page.
Hinge does share one signal, though not with the person you are waiting on. As of October 5, 2026, Hinge’s help center says its Last Active feature gives “an approximate idea of when a member was last active on the app”, shown as “Active Now” or “Active Today” next to the profile photo. It also says “Your Matches won’t see your Last Active status.” The status shows only to members viewing your profile in Discover, Standouts or their Likes You tab. You can hide it with the Show Last Active Status setting, and if you do, the help center says, others cannot see your status and you cannot see theirs (Hinge Help Center, 2026). So other members who see your profile in Discover, Standouts or Likes You can see that you were on the app today, and the match whose message you have not answered cannot.
Does Bumble have read receipts?
No, and Bumble has said so itself. As of October 5, 2026, Bumble’s help center says “Bumble doesn’t show read receipts when you send or receive a message, or your online or activity status.” It adds a reason, which is Bumble’s own: “We believe conversations should feel comfortable and low-pressure.” (Bumble Help Center, 2026). Of the four apps on this page, Bumble is the only one whose stated reason we found.
We found no paid tier that adds them. On October 5, 2026, Bumble’s US App Store listing described its premium services as “advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode, and Travel Mode”, and listed Bumble Boost, Bumble Premium and BumbleCoins as in-app purchases. Read receipts were not among them (Apple App Store, 2026a).
One image in Bumble’s press release of August 11, 2026, about a redesigned chat, shows a sent opening message with “Delivered” in gray beneath it (Bumble Inc., 2026). That is a press image, not a help article. “Delivered” means the message arrived, which is the second of Hoyle’s three states, not the third. The same release changed who sends the first message and how long the other person has to reply; that part is on our dating app opening lines page.
Typing dots on Bumble are reported by a third-party page, a SwipeStats post dated May 15, 2026 (SwipeStats, 2026). We did not find them in the Bumble help text we could read. The rest of how Bumble works is on our Bumble page, and Hinge vs Bumble puts the two side by side.
Does Tinder have read receipts?
Not anymore. Tinder used to sell read receipts one chat at a time. Tinder’s help pages (we read a Spanish-language one) say they let a buyer see whether a match had read their messages and at what time, and that the match would not know the buyer had switched them on. The same pages say purchases of Read Receipts ended and the feature was eliminated on January 7, 2026, and that anyone with unused read receipts after that date could ask the support team for a refund (Tinder Help Center, 2026a).
The person on the other end could opt out. Tinder’s safety center has a section headed “Turn off Read Receipts”, which says: “Turning this off will prevent any matches from activating read receipts in your conversation from this moment forward.” (Tinder Safety Center, undated). The page carries no date and still had that section when we read it on October 5, 2026. Our reading: it describes how the switch worked while the feature existed, and it has not caught up with the help pages.
The App Store points the same way. On October 5, 2026, the ten in-app purchases shown on Tinder’s US App Store listing were versions of Tinder Gold, Tinder Plus, Boost and Super Likes, and Read Receipts was not one of them (Apple App Store, 2026b). A missing listing fits the end of the feature without proving it on its own.
What Tinder still shows is activity, on profiles you are browsing. As of October 5, 2026, Tinder’s help center says green dots appear next to potential matches “who’ve been online in the last 24 hours”, and that Gold and Platinum subscribers may see the dots in Likes You. You can switch yours off under Recently Active Status in Settings (Tinder Help Center, 2026b). A separate label, Online Now, marks recommended profiles active “in the last two hours”, with its own switch in Settings (Tinder Help Center, 2026c).
On typing, a CometChat teardown dated October 26, 2023 describes three dots next to the match’s name (CometChat, 2023). It is a third-party description from before read receipts ended, so we give it with its date. The rest of the app is on our Tinder page.
What else can a match see? Screenshots, typing and active status
Here is what each app lets the other person see, from the pages we read on October 5, 2026. Each cell names a source or says what we did not find.
| What the other person can see | Hinge | Bumble | Tinder | Feeld |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Read receipt | None found; no Hinge statement, and the pages we read describe none (SlashGear, 2025a; fotto.ai, 2026) | No (Bumble Help Center, 2026) | Ended January 7, 2026; before that, bought per chat, and the other person could switch it off, per an undated safety page (Tinder Help Center, 2026a; Tinder Safety Center, undated) | Yes, free for all members; two check marks mean opened (Feeld Help Center, 2026) |
| Sent or delivered state | One page reports a “Sent” label and nothing more (SlashGear, 2025a), another lists no “delivered” (fotto.ai, 2026); not confirmed by Hinge | “Delivered” under a sent opener in a press image (Bumble Inc., 2026) | Not checked | One check mark: reached Feeld’s servers, “may or may not” have reached the phone (Feeld Help Center, 2026) |
| Typing indicator | Sources disagree; not confirmed (CometChat, 2025; fotto.ai, 2026) | Reported by a third-party page; not in Bumble’s help text we could read (SwipeStats, 2026) | Three dots, per a 2023 third-party teardown (CometChat, 2023) | Not checked |
| Active or last-seen status | Not to matches; “Active Now” or “Active Today” to others in Discover, Standouts and Likes You, unless hidden (Hinge Help Center, 2026) | No (Bumble Help Center, 2026) | Green dot for the last 24 hours and “Online Now” for the last two; both can be switched off (Tinder Help Center, 2026b; Tinder Help Center, 2026c) | Not checked; Feeld’s paid tier lists a “Last Seen” filter (see our Feeld page) |
| Screenshot alert | No alert reported; no Hinge statement found (SlashGear, 2025b) | No Bumble statement found | No Tinder statement found | No alert claim found; Feeld lists screenshot protection, untested by us (see our Feeld page) |
The table also answers the question the other way round. Can a match see that you read their message? On Hinge, we found no way; on Bumble, no. On Tinder, not since January 7, 2026. On Feeld, yes, with two check marks. On Hinge, the match cannot see your Last Active status either, though members browsing Discover, Standouts or Likes You can (Hinge Help Center, 2026).
Does Hinge notify screenshots? We found no Hinge statement about screenshot alerts either way. SlashGear looked at the question on April 25, 2025 and wrote that “Hinge will not notify the other person if you have taken a screenshot of the conversation.” (SlashGear, 2025b). We found no statement on screenshot alerts from Bumble or Tinder, and no app on this page says it sends one. Feeld comes at it from the other side: it lists screenshot protection among its safety tools, a claim covered, and untested, on our Feeld page.
Our view: with no app promising an alert, assume anything you send in a chat can be saved, on all four.
Feeld, and a 2017 precedent
Feeld is the one app here that shows read receipts, and it does not charge for them. As of October 5, 2026, Feeld’s help center says: “Read receipts and send confirmations are free for all Feeld members.” Slide a sent message to the left and the details appear. “1 check mark: The message was sent successfully. It may or may not have made it to your connections device, but it made it to Feeld servers.” (spelling as on the page) “2 check marks: The message has been opened by your connection.” (Feeld Help Center, 2026).
Put against Hoyle’s three states, one check mark is the first, sent to the service, and two check marks are the third. The second, delivered to the phone, is the one Feeld says the message “may or may not” have reached. Tinder used to charge for what Feeld gives every member.
The feature is not new on dating apps. On March 17, 2017, TechCrunch ran the headline “The League adds read receipts, so paid members can confirm when someone is really ghosting them”. The article reported The League’s own claim that read receipts were the “single most requested feature among members of its pilot paid membership program”, a membership the article puts at $179.99 a year (TechCrunch, 2017). It is the earliest dated read receipt on a dating app that we found, and we did not check whether The League still offers it.
What “seen” tells you, and what it doesn’t
These studies are about messengers, not dating apps, and they describe how people on either side of a receipt reported feeling and explaining it.
Hoyle and colleagues ran two Mechanical Turk surveys of US residents about Facebook Messenger, one of senders and one of recipients. Senders reported “a range of emotions” when a message was not read, or was “read but not answered immediately”. Recipients, for their part, sometimes avoided opening a message, or opened one, as a signal to the sender (Hoyle et al., 2017). The same check mark means different things on each screen. The sample sizes and shares are on our left on read page.
Chou and colleagues, at a Taiwanese university, built a typology of why people read and do not reply, and they call the mismatches between senders’ guesses and recipients’ reasons “sources of communicative friction” (Chou et al., 2022). Our reading: a receipt gives the sender a time and leaves the reason on the other screen. The counts are on the left on read page.
A questionnaire study of college students in Japan found negative emotions arriving sooner for a message shown as read than for an unread one (Kato et al., 2020). The sample was all women, so we draw nothing about men or women from it, and its figures are on the left on read page.
The limits are wide. These samples were built for messengers, so they say nothing about daters, and Chou’s typology is qualitative, so it names kinds of reasons without saying how common any of them are. A focus-group study from South Korea, four groups with 20 participants, looked at stress on mobile messengers in general (Shin et al., 2018). We found no study of read receipts inside a dating app.
The forum talk we found is mostly about WhatsApp, not dating apps: the blue check marks that show a message was read, which is where a chat can end up once two people swap numbers. On Mumsnet, a British parenting forum, a thread started July 2, 2020 (about 47 replies) asked whether someone’s WhatsApp blue-tick settings were a reason not to trust them, and most replies, by our read, saw no red flag in it (Mumsnet, 2020a). Another, started November 26, 2020 (about 45 replies), asked how long to wait after being “blue ticked” (Mumsnet, 2020b). The longest, started November 21, 2017 (about 129 replies), was about people who read a message and do not reply, and most replies, by our read, defended answering in their own time (Mumsnet, 2017).
For the waiting itself, how long is long and whether to write again, our left on read page goes further. A second message has its own page under double texting. When the silence has gone on long enough to be an answer, see ghosting and how to respond to ghosting.
Common questions
Does Hinge show when you read a message?
We found none. As of October 5, 2026, no page we read describes read receipts on Hinge, and we found no statement from Hinge explaining why. Hinge's help center describes a Last Active status, "Active Now" or "Active Today", but says matches won't see it; it shows to other members in Discover, Standouts and Likes You. Pages that describe Hinge disagree on whether typing dots appear, and we could not confirm a sent label either.
Can you turn off read receipts on Hinge?
We found no read receipts on Hinge and no setting for them, as of October 5, 2026. The setting Hinge does have is Show Last Active Status. Hinge's help center says that if you hide your status, other members cannot see it and you cannot see theirs. Matches do not see it either way; it shows only to people viewing your profile in Discover, Standouts or Likes You.
Does Hinge notify screenshots?
We found no Hinge statement about screenshot alerts either way, as of October 5, 2026. SlashGear reported in an April 25, 2025 article that Hinge will not notify the other person if you take a screenshot of a conversation. That is a third-party report, not Hinge's word. Our view: on any app, treat anything you send as something that could be saved.
Does Bumble have read receipts with Premium?
No. Bumble's help center says Bumble doesn't show read receipts, or your online or activity status, and gives its own reason: conversations "should feel comfortable and low-pressure". On October 5, 2026, Bumble's US App Store listing described premium as advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode, and listed Bumble Boost, Bumble Premium and BumbleCoins as purchases. Read receipts were not among them.
Can you still buy read receipts on Tinder?
No. Tinder's help pages say purchases of Read Receipts ended and the feature was eliminated on January 7, 2026, and that anyone with unused read receipts after that date could ask the support team for a refund. On October 5, 2026, the ten in-app purchases shown on Tinder's US App Store listing were versions of Tinder Gold, Tinder Plus, Boost and Super Likes, and none was Read Receipts.
