Best free dating apps: what each free tier actually lets you do

Updated · 13 min read

The three apps we score, Hinge, Tinder and Bumble, are free to download, match and chat. The limits sit on likes and on seeing who liked you; only Hinge publishes its like limit, eight a day. Meta calls Facebook Dating, which we have not reviewed, free. We found no app that publishes a success rate with a method.

This page covers free tiers only: what you can do without paying, where each paywall starts, and which services say there is nothing to buy. The scores and the full price table are in our best dating apps guide. We read the companies’ own pages and the US App Store on October 4, 2026, and did not test the apps for this page.

What does “free” mean on a dating app?

“Free” on a dating app has three layers, and of the three ranking lists we opened, Glamour UK never says which one it means and Mashable stops at the second.

The first layer is the download and the profile. Every app we checked lets you do both without paying.

The second is matching and chatting with the people you match. Hinge, Tinder and Bumble allow both for free, on a daily allowance of likes. When it runs out, you wait or you pay.

The third layer has a price: more likes or unlimited ones, a view of who has already liked you, boosts that show your profile to more people, and narrower filters. Each app bundles them differently.

By the one independent count we found, most people who have dated online have not paid: in Pew Research Center’s survey of 6,034 US adults, fielded July 5 to 17, 2022, 35% of those who had dated online said they had ever paid for a dating site or app (Pew Research Center, 2023). The owners’ payer counts are in the hub guide.

Our view: whether an app is free is rarely the real question. The question is how many likes you need in a day, and whether the app tells you the number before you run out.

Free dating apps compared: what the free tier allows

The first three rows are the apps we score. The last three are services we have not reviewed, listed only with what we could check on October 4, 2026.

Prices are in-app purchase list prices on the US App Store, in US dollars, read October 4, 2026 (Apple App Store, 2026). None of the US entries for the three scored apps named a billing period, so we list the prices as shown and convert nothing into a monthly cost. UK readers see other prices in pounds; most UK entries name no period either, and the exceptions are in the price table in our best dating apps guide. “Not published” means the company states no number on its own pages and we add none from anyone else. “Not checked” means we did not open, or could not open, a company page that answers the question.

Is Hinge free?

Yes. Hinge is free to download, and a free account can match and chat.

What it rations is likes. Hinge’s mission page says “Everyone gets eight for free” in a passage about free likes per day; we read that as eight likes a day, as of October 4, 2026 (Hinge, 2026). Each like goes on one photo or prompt answer, with or without a comment, so the eight are eight small choices rather than eight swipes.

Your Turn Limits is a separate rule, covered in our best dating apps guide: while eight or more chats wait on your reply, Hinge pauses new likes and matches (Hinge Newsroom, 2024; Hinge Press, 2024).

Hinge’s help pages on Roses, Standouts and what free members see of incoming likes would not open for us, so this page says nothing about them.

The US App Store listing says Hinge+ adds unlimited likes, a view of who has already liked you, and advanced preferences (Apple App Store, 2026). On October 4, 2026 that listing priced Hinge+ at $16.99 and $19.99, an item called “Hinge Subscription” at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99, and one called Membership at $19.99, with no billing period on any of them and nothing to say what separates them. HingeX, which Hinge’s Swedish listing says adds priority likes and “enhanced recommendations”, was not in the US list that day. Roses and Boost are one-off buys: 3 Roses for $9.99, 12 Roses for $29.99, Boost at $9.99 or $19.99.

Our view: the free tier fits people who would rather write a line to one person than like twenty profiles in a row. If you like by volume, eight is gone by breakfast.

Is Tinder free?

Yes. On Tinder you can download the app, swipe, match and chat with your matches without paying. Tinder’s FAQ says “The basics (create a profile, like people, match) are all free”; it does not mention chat, and we found no Tinder page that puts chatting with a match behind a paywall (Tinder, 2026).

The free tier has a ceiling on likes, and Tinder does not say where it is. Its tier page sells Plus on “Unlimited Likes”, which tells you free likes are capped, but we found no number on Tinder’s own pages on October 4, 2026, and its help center would not load for us (Tinder, 2026). We add no figure from third parties. You learn the limit on the day the app says you are out.

Tinder’s tier page lists See Who Likes You under Gold and Platinum, not under Plus or the free tier, and it sells “Swipe ad-free” as a Plus feature, which implies ads on the free tier without saying so outright (Tinder, 2026).

On the same page, Plus also brings rewinds, Tinder’s undo button for swipes, and Platinum adds Prioritized Likes and messaging someone before you match. On the US App Store on October 4, 2026, Plus was listed at $9.99 and Gold at $13.99, $14.99, $18.99 and $24.99, none with a billing period; Platinum had no US list price in what we read, Boost ran from $3.99 to $7.99, and five Super Likes cost $4.99 (Apple App Store, 2026).

A thread on Mumsnet, a British parenting forum, shows how the question comes up. In August 2022 the person asking about free sites found that Match needed payment to message and was pointed to Tinder, Bumble and Plenty of Fish instead (Mumsnet, 2022a). We found no Tinder page that puts chatting after a match behind a paywall, and that is as far as we can say.

Is Bumble free?

Yes. Bumble is free to download, swipe and match, and nothing in its August 11, 2026 announcement on how chats open puts the chat behind a paywall (Bumble Inc., 2026). It caps likes on the free tier and, like Tinder, publishes no number; we found none on its pages on October 4, 2026, and its help center would not open for us.

The larger change this year is who writes first. Since August 11, 2026, either person in a match can send the opening message, and TechCrunch reported that the time to respond to it grew from 24 hours to 72 (TechCrunch, 2026). That announcement does not mention Opening Moves, a Bumble feature we have not checked, and we found no Bumble page on its current status.

On the US App Store on October 4, 2026, Premium was listed at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99 and Boost at $2.99 to $12.99, with no billing period on any US entry (Apple App Store, 2026).

Our view: on Bumble the clock matters as much as the cap. A first message has 72 hours to get a reply, and a like limit you never see matters less than remembering to write.

Which dating apps are completely free?

None of the three we score: Hinge, Tinder and Bumble all sell subscriptions. The three services below are often listed as free. We have not reviewed or scored them, and “free” here means only what their own pages said on October 4, 2026, or that we found no statement.

Facebook Dating. In a post dated September 22, 2025, Meta described it as “a free dating experience within the Facebook app” that avoids “endless swiping or paying to unlock product features” (Meta, 2025). The post does not say how the product earns money. Meta announced its launch in the UK and 31 European countries in October 2020 (Meta, 2020); we did not check whether it shows ads or caps likes. How to find Facebook Dating inside the app, Meta’s requirements and what to check when it is not showing up are on our Facebook Dating page.

OkCupid. Its own pages would not load for us on October 4, 2026, so we found no statement from the company on what the free tier covers, and we repeat none from the ranking lists.

Plenty of Fish. Its homepage says “Date, chat and match for free” (Plenty of Fish, 2026). Its help pages would not open for us, so we cannot say where the free tier stops.

Our view: free to use is not the same as having no business model. We found no statement on how Facebook Dating earns money; OkCupid and Plenty of Fish belong to Match Group, which also owns Tinder and Hinge (Match Group, 2026).

What do you lose by not paying?

Our view: the free tier mostly costs you volume and the shortcut of seeing who has already liked you, and we found no study showing that paying raises your odds of a match or a relationship. Which apps are built for one is a design question, covered in our best dating apps for serious relationships guide.

The closest data measures attitude. In Pew Research Center’s 2022 survey, US online daters who had paid for a site or app were somewhat more likely to describe their experience as positive, 58% against 50% for those who had not paid, with no difference among women or among people under 50 (Pew Research Center, 2023). Our reading: that is how people felt about online dating across all apps, not whether they met anyone, and people who pay may differ from people who do not in ways the survey does not separate.

Mumsnet threads are anecdotes, and they are less positive about paying than Pew’s survey. In a September 2022 thread on Tinder’s free version, members said it worked, named changing your location and seeing who had liked you as the two reasons to pay, and one called paying not worth it (Mumsnet, 2022b). In a March 2024 thread on whether paying for an app like Match is worth it, most replies said no, because the same people turn up on every app, and pointed to Hinge or Bumble instead, while a couple said paid eharmony or Match had worked for them (Mumsnet, 2024).

There is a consumer record too, for US readers. The FTC sued Match Group in the Northern District of Texas on September 25, 2019 (case 3:19-cv-02281), and on August 12, 2025 it announced a $14 million settlement covering the company’s six-month guarantee, account suspensions after billing disputes, and cancellation, on a 3-0 Commission vote (Federal Trade Commission, 2025). The order needs court approval, and the FTC’s case page still listed the case as pending on October 4, 2026 (Federal Trade Commission, 2026).

Our rule of thumb: pay only after you have hit the free limit three days in a row and still want more, and only for a period the app names before you confirm. Three days is our number; we found no research behind it.

How the ranking lists define “free”

We opened three of the lists that rank for this search in the US and UK.

Mashable’s list, titled “10 Best free dating apps (Sept. 2026): Tested and ranked” in the browser tab and “The 10 best free dating apps that won’t charge you just to send a message” on the page, by Anna Iovine and Tabitha Britt and dated September 24, 2026, ranks 10 apps after a four-week test, carries the line “We may earn an affiliate commission if you buy through our links.” and gives a “Promoted” slot to AdultFriendFinder (Mashable, 2026). It defines free as a “functional free membership” that lets you “talk and match” without paying. Its Bumble entry gives a 24-hour match window in one place and 72 hours in another, and it calls Facebook Dating “100 percent free”.

SciMatch’s “Best Free Dating Apps 2026: Ranked by What’s Actually Free” names no author, says “Last updated April 2026”, ranks six apps with its own product first, and shows no affiliate line that we found; we read it through a fetch summary, not in full (SciMatch, 2026).

Glamour UK’s “11 best free dating sites for 2026, tried and tested by our single editors”, by Fleurine Tideman and dated December 10, 2025, ranks 11 services, opens with “Our editors work with affiliates when we select some or all of the products featured” and never defines free, treating free to download as enough; we read the first third (Glamour UK, 2025).

Our reading: in the parts we read, none of the three gives a per-app like limit with a date and the company’s own page as its source.

How to use this

  1. The published limit first. Hinge states eight free likes a day; on Tinder and Bumble you find the ceiling only by reaching it. Basis: the companies’ own pages, read October 4, 2026.
  2. Likes on profiles you would actually write to. With a fixed allowance, one comment on a prompt is a better use of a like than a burst of them. Basis: our view, from how the limits work.
  3. A count of the days you run out. Three days in a row, still wanting more, is when a month of paying starts to make sense. Basis: our rule of thumb, not a study.
  4. The billing period, checked before you pay. No US store entry for the three apps named one on October 4, 2026, so confirm it in the app, then compare the three in the price table in our best dating apps guide. Basis: App Store listings.

Common questions

What is the best free dating app?

It depends on what you need for free. If it is likes, Hinge is the only one of the three apps we score that publishes a number: eight a day, per its mission page, read October 4, 2026. Tinder and Bumble publish none. If you want nothing to buy at all, Meta describes Facebook Dating as free, but we have not reviewed it. Our view: start with the app whose limit you can see.

Is there a 100% free dating app?

Not among the three apps we score: Hinge, Tinder and Bumble all sell subscriptions. In a post dated September 22, 2025, Meta described Facebook Dating as a free dating experience inside the Facebook app, with no paying to unlock features. We have not reviewed it. Our view: nothing to buy does not mean nothing to sell, and Meta's post does not say how Facebook Dating earns money.

Is Hinge free?

Yes, to download, match and chat. The free tier runs on likes: Hinge's mission page says everyone gets eight, which means eight likes a day, read October 4, 2026. According to the US App Store listing, Hinge+ adds unlimited likes and shows who has already liked you; on October 4, 2026 it was listed from $16.99, with no billing period named.

Is Tinder free without paying?

Yes. You can download Tinder, swipe, match and chat with your matches without paying. The free tier has a like limit that Tinder does not publish; we found no number on its own pages on October 4, 2026, and we add none from elsewhere. Tinder Plus, which the tier page sells on unlimited likes, was listed at $9.99 on the US App Store that day, with no billing period named.

Which dating app has the highest success rate?

We found no app that publishes a success rate with a method behind it, and no independent study that ranks dating apps by outcome. The company figures we have seen on dates or marriages come without a method we could check. What can be compared is design: limits, paywalls and prompts. Our guide to the best dating apps for serious relationships scores that, not results.
