Hinge vs Bumble in 2026: which one is better, and for whom

Updated · 12 min read

Hinge or Bumble comes down to how you like to start. On Hinge you react to one photo or prompt, and free likes are rationed. Bumble is swipes and a 72-hour timer, and since August 11, 2026, either person can write first. Neither shows how many users end up together. Filings show Hinge's paying users growing and Bumble's shrinking.

We did not use either app for this comparison. We looked at their store listings, the companies’ announcements and their quarterly filings, and anything that is our opinion says so.

Our view: neither wins outright, and the gap narrowed in August. Hinge makes you react to one specific thing and brakes hard on unanswered chats. Bumble is swipes, a 72-hour clock and the bigger pool, at least by Pew’s count of who has ever used each. The deciding question is how you like a conversation to begin.

How matching and the first message work

On Hinge, you never like a whole profile. You like or comment on one part of it: a photo, a prompt answer or a voice prompt (Apple App Store, 2026). Prompts are short questions people answer on their profiles. A comment is your opening line, and it arrives attached to the thing it is about, which makes a bare “hey” look thin.

The Hinge rule that matters most for how people behave, in our view, is Your Turn Limits. Once eight or more chats are waiting on your reply, you get no new likes or matches until you answer or end some. Hinge announced the test on May 14, 2024 and made the rule global on September 18, 2024 (Hinge, 2024c; Hinge, 2024a). Hinge presents it as a brake on ghosting, going quiet on someone instead of telling them it is over. We found no data on whether it works.

Bumble matches by swiping. A match needs a yes from both sides, and if nobody writes within 72 hours, it expires (Bumble Inc., 2026b).

The first message is what changed. On August 11, 2026, Bumble ended the rule that in a match between a man and a woman, the woman had to write first. Either person can now open, and both have 72 hours to do it, up from 24. Each match gets one opening message, and the chat opens only when the other person replies. A low-effort opener gets a nudge to do better (Bumble Inc., 2026b).

Bumble’s reasons come with footnotes. Bumble says 66% of the women it surveyed prefer that men send the first message, and that two-thirds of daters feel more confident when they have a choice in how a conversation begins (Bumble Inc., 2026b). The tests behind the change were internal, run with members in Canada in June and July 2026 (Bumble Inc., 2026b). The 66% figure is Bumble’s own data on 2,267 women using Bumble in the US, surveyed in August 2024, so it describes Bumble’s users rather than women in general (Bumble Inc., 2026b). The two-thirds line comes from research Bumble commissioned among 2,000 single US dating-app users aged 18 to 35, in February and March 2025 (Bumble Inc., 2026b). None of it is independent.

When the change reaches your account is less clear. On October 4, 2026, Bumble’s US and Swedish App Store listings both still described the old women-first rule (Apple App Store, 2026), so we cannot confirm the rollout per account.

What free gets you, and what each costs

Free Hinge accounts get eight likes a day. Hinge’s mission page says so in as many words; its help center would not load for us (Hinge, 2026b). Bumble does not publish how many likes a free account gets, and we found no source we trust for a number.

All prices here are App Store list prices from October 4, 2026 (Apple App Store, 2026). In the US, Hinge listed Hinge+ at $16.99 and $19.99, items called “Hinge Subscription” at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99, and Roses at three for $9.99. Bumble listed Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99, Boost from $2.99 to $12.99 and BumbleCoins at $1.99. In Sweden, Hinge+ started at 179 kr, and Bumble sold 1 Month Premium for 249 kr and a 7-day Premium for 119 kr.

That 249 kr is the only price in either listing labeled as a month. No US item names a billing period at all, so this page gives no US monthly price. Several prices for one tier probably mean several plan lengths, and prices may vary by location or promotion; the listings do not say.

Some comparison sites put these apps at $30 to $35 a month. None of the listed items names a billing period, so we cannot call any of them a monthly plan at that price. A few cost about that much, but what period they buy is not shown. We did not fetch UK prices; in the UK, the app is the place to see them.

Which is better for what

Evidence first, then our view, labeled.

  • Serious relationships. Neither company publishes outcome data, so there is no way to show that one app leads to more relationships. Wedding-survey figures circulate online, but we could not verify them at the source, so they are not here. Our view: on design alone, Hinge, because its rules make coasting harder. Nobody has measured what that does for outcomes.
  • Casual. In Pew’s survey, 40% of US adults who had used a dating site or app in the past year named casual dating as a major reason, a figure not split by app (Pew, 2023a). Our view: Bumble, narrowly, because a swipe is quicker than a comment. If casual is the whole plan, Tinder’s pool is bigger than either.
  • Women’s experience. Among US women under 50 who had used dating sites or apps, 56% had been sent a sexually explicit message or image they did not ask for (Pew, 2023a). That figure covers all apps. Bumble launched ID Verification in March 2025 in 11 countries, including the US and the UK but not Sweden (TechCrunch, 2025). Hinge has had Comment Filter, for comments sent with likes, since March 2025, and requires a verified selfie for its Signals badge (Hinge, 2024b, updated 2025; Hinge, 2026a). Our view: closer than the reputations suggest, and we score both 3.
  • Over 40. Neither company publishes an age breakdown. Among US online daters 50 and older, Pew found those in their 50s more likely than older users to have used Bumble, and no significant differences by age group for Hinge (Pew, 2023b). Nothing we found covers people in their 40s. Our view: age alone is no reason to rule either out, and who shows up near you says more than any survey. For the 50-plus numbers in full, see dating after 50.
  • LGBTQ+. In Pew’s survey, 51% of LGB adults had used a dating site or app, against 28% of straight adults, a figure for online dating as a whole (Pew, 2023a). Bumble’s women-first rule only ever covered matches between a man and a woman, so its end changes less here. Our view: nothing we found tips it either way, so format decides.
  • Small cities. No evidence we found, and no user numbers by city for either app. Match Group describes Hinge’s core markets as relatively flat (Match Group, 2026); Bumble reports no monthly active users (Bumble Inc., 2026a). Our view: in a small pool, headcount matters more than features, and we found no way to count it from outside.
  • Cost. No US item in either listing names its billing period; in Sweden, only Bumble’s 249 kr plan is labeled as a month (Apple App Store, 2026). We score both 3 on cost. Our view: Bumble is easier to price, and Hinge’s free tier is easier to plan around, because its limit at least has a number.

Who actually uses each

The independent numbers we found are Pew Research Center’s, and they are not recent. The survey ran July 5 to 17, 2022, with 6,034 US adults, and was published on February 2, 2023. Of all US adults, 14% had ever used Tinder, 8% Bumble and 6% Hinge. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, the figures were 42%, 27% and 21% (Pew, 2023a).

Those figures cover anyone who ever used an app, current or not, and the fieldwork predates most of this page. We found no newer Pew figures by app. Our app pages give the same survey as shares of online daters, so their numbers run higher.

In the UK, Ofcom’s summary of its May 2024 data puts monthly reach at 1.9 million for Tinder, 1.4 million for Hinge and 1.1 million for Bumble, and names Hinge as the only top-ten dating service with more women than men, 53% to 47% (Ofcom, 2024). Ofcom has published a newer edition since, which we have not checked.

Company filings are newer. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Hinge had 2.0 million payers, up 17%, direct revenue of $204 million, up 22%, and revenue per payer of $33.11 (Match Group, 2026). Hinge’s monthly active users rose 13% globally, although Match Group describes its core markets as relatively flat, with the growth in expansion markets (Match Group, 2026).

Bumble went the other way. The Bumble app had 2,077,100 paying users, against 2,499,800 a year earlier (Bumble Inc., 2026a). Paying users across the company fell 16.4% to 3.2 million, and Bumble app revenue fell 14.7% to $171.7 million (Bumble Inc., 2026a). Average revenue per paying user of the Bumble app was $27.55, and Bumble reports no monthly active users (Bumble Inc., 2026a).

That is near parity in payers, heading in opposite directions. These are company-reported figures from earnings releases, and the two companies define their terms differently, so the direction is more reliable than the comparison.

What about Tinder?

Tinder is the usual third name in this comparison, and by Pew’s count the most used: 14% of US adults and 42% of 18- to 29-year-olds had ever used it (Pew, 2023a). Like Hinge, it belongs to Match Group. It is swipes without a timer, and we found nothing in it that limits how many chats you leave unanswered. On October 4, 2026, Plus started at $9.99 in the US App Store (Apple App Store, 2026). We score it 5 on pool and 4 on ghosting. The rest is on our Tinder page, and the two Match Group apps side by side are in our Hinge vs Tinder comparison.

How we scored them

Every app on this site gets the same five scores from 1 to 5: serious, cost, pool, women and ghosting. On ghosting, a high score means the app makes disappearing easy. In that order, Hinge scores 4, 3, 3, 3 and 2, Bumble 3 on all five, and Tinder 2, 3, 5, 3 and 4.

Hinge’s and Bumble’s serious scores rest on product rules, not user outcomes. Hinge’s 4 comes from its stated intent, Your Turn Limits and the Signals badge, which counts replying among its criteria. Bumble’s 3 is preliminary, because we found no data either way on what its users want. On ghosting, Hinge’s 2 comes from Your Turn Limits, the one rule here that stops you from doing anything else until you answer. Bumble’s 3 reflects a timer that closes any match nobody opens, which ends the waiting and makes vanishing automatic.

The reasoning for every score is on our Hinge and Bumble pages, and the method is on our about page.

How to use this

  1. Two weeks on one free tier. Both apps work without paying, within limits. Our guess: two weeks is long enough to see who is actually near you, which no table, ours included, can tell you.
  2. The billing period, checked in the app. No US item in either store listing names its period, and the monthly figures on other sites fill that gap with guesses. The app is the one place left to look.
  3. A pick based on how you like to start. One line about one photo, or a swipe and a 72-hour clock. Our view: reputations lean on the companies’ own marketing, and the rule behind Bumble’s ended in August.
  4. An honest count of your unanswered chats. If threads tend to pile up, Hinge stops new likes and matches at eight (Hinge, 2024c), and Bumble’s timer closes any match nobody opens (Bumble Inc., 2026b). Either way, the app decides if you do not.

Common questions

What is the 8 rule on Hinge?

People mean one of two things. Free accounts get eight likes a day, which Hinge's own mission page states; its help center would not load for us (Hinge, 2026b). The other is Your Turn Limits: once eight or more chats are waiting on your reply, you get no new likes or matches until you answer or end some. Hinge announced the test on May 14, 2024 and rolled it out globally on September 18, 2024 (Hinge, 2024c; Hinge, 2024a).

Can men message first on Bumble now?

According to Bumble, yes: since August 11, 2026. That day Bumble ended the rule that in a match between a man and a woman, the woman had to write first. Now either person can open, both get 72 hours instead of 24, and the opener gets one message until the other person replies (Bumble Inc., 2026b). When we looked on October 4, 2026, Bumble's US and Swedish App Store listings still described the old rule (Apple App Store, 2026).

How much does Hinge cost per month?

We cannot give a monthly figure, because the App Store does not label billing periods. On October 4, 2026, the US listing showed Hinge+ at $16.99 and $19.99, plus items called "Hinge Subscription" at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99. In Sweden, Hinge+ started at 179 kr (Apple App Store, 2026). Several prices per tier probably mean several plan lengths. The app is where to check the price and the period before you pay.

Is 45 too old for Hinge?

Hinge publishes no age breakdown, so there is no Hinge number to hold 45 against. The closest data is Pew's July 2023 piece on online daters 50 and older: Hinge showed no significant differences by age group, while those in their 50s were more likely than older users to have used Bumble (Pew, 2023b). Nothing we found covers people in their 40s. Our view: 45 is no reason to skip it, and the pool near you is the real test.

Do more guys use Hinge or Bumble?

Neither company publishes a gender split, and Pew's US survey does not break app use down by gender (Pew, 2023a). The one outside figure is British: in Ofcom's May 2024 data, Hinge was the only top-ten dating service in the UK with more women than men, 53% to 47%, and Ofcom gives no split for Bumble (Ofcom, 2024). For the US, nobody outside the companies knows.
