Bumble 2026: how it works, what it costs, who it suits

Bumble was the app where women had to message first. Since August 11, 2026, either person can, and both get 72 hours before the match expires. The rest is familiar: swipes, a free tier with limits Bumble does not publish, and Premium at 249 kr for a month in Sweden. The company is shrinking and rebuilding it. Expect more changes.

Many of the Bumble reviews we looked at still describe the women-first rule in the present tense. They are reviewing an app that changed in August.

How it works

You build a profile, swipe right on people you like and left on the rest, and get a match when the interest goes both ways. That part has not changed.

The first message has. On August 11, 2026, Bumble ended the rule that in a match between a man and a woman, the woman had to write first. Either person can now open the chat, and both get 72 hours before the match expires, up from 24 (TechCrunch, 2026). Bumble backs the change with its own survey and says 66% of the women it asked prefer that men message first (TechCrunch, 2026). We have not seen how that survey was done. What to put in the profile that first message gets built from is in Bumble bios and prompts.

The rule had been loosening for a while. Since April 30, 2024, women could set Opening Moves, a prompt that men answer, so she no longer had to come up with the first line herself (Business Wire, 2024). Bumble’s annual report for 2025 still described a 24-hour window to chat (Bumble 10-K, fiscal 2025). The new timer is new even to the company’s own paperwork. Dexerto, a tech and entertainment site, reported on August 11, 2026 that Opening Moves were removed with the new chat rule; Bumble’s own announcement does not mention it (Dexerto, 2026).

What remains of the women-first design is mostly reputation, and possibly the Swedish version of the app. We found no statement on when Sweden gets the change, and the Swedish tech press reported the change without a date for Sweden (M3, 2026). The Swedish store listing had not been updated when we looked: on October 4, 2026, the Swedish App Store description still said “kvinnan tar första steget”, meaning the woman takes the first step (Apple App Store, 2026). The US listing had caught up by October 6, 2026, when it said anyone can message first and the chat unlocks on a reply (Apple App Store, 2026).

The timer also changes how ghosting, ending contact by simply going silent, works here. A match nobody opens expires on its own after 72 hours. Nobody is left wondering, and nobody has to say no either.

Bumble is not finished rebuilding. TechCrunch reported that it is exploring a swipe-free future, and The Next Web reported in March 2026 that it is testing an AI assistant called Bee and expects some markets to go without swiping in the second half of 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026; The Next Web, 2026). We found no list of which markets.

On safety, Bumble announced ID Verification, a check of a profile against an identity document, on March 17, 2025. It launched in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the UK and the US. Sweden was not on the list. The Swedish store listing does mention ID verification, so we could not confirm whether it is live in Sweden (M3, 2025).

What it costs

Bumble is free to download, swipe and chat. The free tier caps how many likes you can send, and Bumble does not publish the limit; how that compares with Hinge and Tinder is in our best free dating apps guide. Its annual report names three paid tiers: Boost, Premium and Premium+ (Bumble 10-K, fiscal 2025). The Swedish store calls the top one Premium Plus.

These are App Store list prices on October 4, 2026 (Apple App Store, 2026). Most items do not label their billing period, so we do not quote a monthly price for them. The exception is 1 Month Premium at 249 kr, the only labeled monthly price we found among the three big apps. None of the US items carry a period label. A dash means we found no matching item in that store.

Prices vary by plan length and may vary by location or promotion. We found nothing that ties Bumble’s prices to age. Our Tinder page explains why we check for that at all.

Since the free limit is not published, nobody can tell you in advance how far the free tier goes. The 7-day Premium plan, 119 kr, is the shortest labeled option if you want to test paying (Apple App Store, 2026).

Who it suits, and who it does not

Bumble suits people who want a middle ground between Tinder’s volume and Hinge’s writing. You still swipe, but every match comes with a deadline, and three days is enough time to think of something better than “hey”. If you liked the slower opening, that rhythm is still here.

It does not suit anyone choosing Bumble for the women-first rule, because that rule is gone. What still separates it from Tinder is on our Tinder vs Bumble page. Pew does not break harassment down by app, so the old “safer for women” reputation rests on a rule that no longer exists.

The pool is large but shrinking where it pays. Bumble has more than 100 million installs on Google Play (Google Play, 2026). In the US, 28% of online daters have used it at some point, rising to 51% among 18- to 29-year-olds (Pew Research Center, 2023). Those figures count anyone who has ever used it, not active users. In the second quarter of 2026, the Bumble app had 2.08 million paying users, down 16.9% from 2.50 million a year earlier. Paying users across the whole company fell 16.4% to 3.2 million, and Bumble app revenue fell 14.7% to $171.7 million (Bumble Inc., 2026). We found no reliable count of Swedish users.

Hinge or Bumble? Hinge runs on prompts, short questions you answer on your profile, and on limits to how much you can do for free. Bumble runs on swipes and a timer. Neither publishes data on what its users are looking for, so our 4 for Hinge and 3 for Bumble on serious reflect product design, not outcomes. If you like writing, start with Hinge. If you need a deadline before you send a message, Bumble has one built in. Our dating apps comparison puts both on the same five scores, and Hinge vs Bumble goes through prices, filings and who each suits.

Bumble gets 3 on all five scores, and two of them are preliminary, which means we found no usable data and set a 3. Serious is preliminary: we found no data on what Bumble users are looking for, either way. Cost is 3: the free tier works within limits Bumble does not publish, and Premium is 249 kr for a labeled month (Apple App Store, 2026). Pool is 3 because more than 100 million installs sit against paying users falling 16.9% in a year. Women is preliminary: the women-first rule is gone, ID verification is not confirmed for Sweden, and Pew’s figures are not per app. Ghosting is 3 because the 72-hour expiry ends any match nobody opens, which removes the limbo but also makes disappearing automatic.

How we score

Common questions

Is Bumble dating any good?

Middling on our scale, and less distinctive than it was. Bumble is a large swipe app with a timer: a match expires after 72 hours if nobody writes. Since August 11, 2026, either person can open, so the women-first rule no longer sets it apart. The free tier works, within like limits Bumble does not publish. We give it 3 out of 5 on all five scores, and two of them are preliminary.

What are the negatives of Bumble?

The feature that set it apart is gone, because women no longer have to message first. Bumble does not publish the free like limit, so you cannot know in advance how far the free tier gets you. Paying users are falling, and the company is reworking the app again, with less swiping planned in some markets. In Sweden, we could not confirm ID verification or when the new opening rule arrives.

Is Bumble or Hinge better?

Neither wins across the board. Hinge runs on prompts and written answers, while Bumble runs on swipes and a 72-hour timer. Neither publishes data on what its users are looking for, so our serious scores, 4 for Hinge and 3 for Bumble, reflect product design, not user outcomes. Pick Hinge if you like writing. Pick Bumble if a deadline is what gets you to send the first message.

What age group is Bumble best for?

If you go by who has used it, younger adults. In the US, 51% of online daters aged 18 to 29 have used Bumble at some point, compared with 28% of all online daters (Pew Research Center, 2023). Bumble itself does not publish an age split, and we found no Swedish figures. Our best-for label of 25 to 35 is a judgment, not a statistic.

Is Bumble better or Tinder?

Not clearly. Both are swipe apps. Bumble adds a timer: a match expires after 72 hours unless someone writes, so a match nobody opens does not linger. Since August 11, 2026, either person can write first on Bumble, which makes the old difference from Tinder smaller. We found no data on what Bumble users are looking for, so we cannot call it the more serious choice.
