Tinder vs Bumble in 2026: the rule that set them apart is gone
For more than a decade the difference was simple: on Bumble, women wrote first. Since August 11, 2026, either person can. What is left is a shrinking, independent Bumble against a larger Tinder owned by Match Group, safety features launched years apart, and UK audience figures in which Hinge leads both among women. Here is what we could verify.
We did not use either app for this page. We looked at both companies’ filings and announcements, press coverage of their safety features, Ofcom’s UK audience figures and four forum threads. Anything that is our opinion is labeled as ours.
Tinder vs Bumble: what actually differs now
Until August 11, 2026, the difference fit in one line. On Bumble, in a match between a man and a woman, the woman had to write first. On Tinder, either person could. That rule has ended. Either person can now open on Bumble too, and the opener gets one message until the other person replies (Bumble Inc., 2026b). What still separates the two apps is less famous: a clock on new matches, safety features launched years apart, and two companies in very different shape.
Our view: the clock is the biggest practical difference left. A new Bumble match has 72 hours (Bumble Inc., 2026b), and a Tinder match does not expire. Ownership comes next. Tinder belongs to Match Group, which also owns Hinge (Match Group, 2026). Bumble Inc. stands alone and is losing paying users, and according to sources cited by Reuters it is exploring a sale (Bumble Inc., 2026a; Reuters, 2026). We found no peer-reviewed study comparing the two apps, so nothing on this page says which one works better.

What Bumble changed in 2026
On August 11, 2026, Bumble ended the rule that made the woman write first in a match between a man and a woman. Either person can now open. Each match gets one opening message, and the chat opens only when the other person replies. The time limit on a new match went from 24 hours to 72 (Bumble Inc., 2026b). We found no statement from Bumble on when the change reaches each country.
Bumble’s case for the change rests on its own users. According to TechCrunch, Bumble said 66% of the women it surveyed preferred men to write first, and over half of those asked said the longer window made the experience better (TechCrunch, 2026). That is company research on people already using Bumble, not an independent study. Our Hinge vs Bumble page has the sample sizes and survey dates.
The change came six days after a quarter in which revenue fell. In the three months to June 30, 2026, Bumble Inc.’s revenue was $210.5 million, down 15.2% from a year earlier, and paying users across the company fell 16.4% to 3.2 million. The Bumble app had 2.08 million of them, and average revenue per paying user on the app was $27.55 (Bumble Inc., 2026a). For the third quarter, the company guided to revenue of $205 million to $213 million, around where the second quarter ended (Bumble Inc., 2026a).
The company itself may change hands. In June 2026, Reuters reported, citing sources it did not name, that Bumble was working with Morgan Stanley on a possible sale. Reuters put Bumble’s market value at about $388 million and Blackstone’s stake at about 22%, and said no deal was certain (Reuters, 2026).
Meanwhile, Bumble is trimming what sits around the dating app. In September 2025 it launched a new standalone BFF app in the US, replacing its earlier friends app there (Global Dating Insights, 2025), and Bumble says it “has not sought to generate revenue from the BFF app” (Bumble Inc., 2026a). Bumble’s help center says Bizz, its networking mode, is being phased out, without giving a date (Bumble Support, undated). Fruitz, another dating app in the group, has been discontinued (Bumble Inc., 2026a).
Our reading: the product and the company are being rebuilt at the same time. Any page that still presents Bumble’s “feminist” rules as the reason to pick it is describing an app that changed in August.
Tinder in 2026, briefly
Tinder is shrinking as well, from a bigger base. In the second quarter of 2026, Tinder’s daily active users were down 4% year over year, and Match Group called that its best result in ten quarters (Match Group, 2026). Our news item on Match Group’s quarter has the rest of the figures.
The product news came at Tinder Sparks, the company’s first product keynote, on March 12, 2026. Tinder announced Chemistry, daily profile picks chosen by AI, along with Learning Mode and an Events beta (Tinder, 2026a). Earlier, on October 22, 2025, it said it would expand Face Check, its video-selfie check, across the US (Tinder, 2025). The safety section below covers what Face Check does.
The basic deal has not changed. You swipe, a match needs a right swipe from both people, and then either of you can write, with no deadline. Our Tinder page has the rules, the dated prices and our scores, and our Hinge vs Tinder comparison sets Tinder against the other big Match Group app, so neither is repeated here.
Safety features, side by side with dates
Both companies have been adding checks for years. Below, each feature has the date it arrived and the source that reported it.
Bumble’s safety features
- Private Detector, 2019. An AI tool that blurs lewd images until you choose to open them, announced on April 24, 2019 with a rollout planned for June that year (Fortune, 2019).
- Deception Detector, February 6, 2024. AI aimed at spam, scam and fake accounts. Bumble says that in testing it blocked 95% of the accounts it identified as spam or scam, and that user reports of such accounts fell 45% in the first two months after it was introduced. Both are Bumble’s figures, not independent ones (Business Wire, 2024b).
- ID Verification, March 17, 2025. A badge for profiles checked against a government ID. You can filter for it and ask a match to verify. It launched in the eleven countries listed in the table (TechCrunch, 2025).
- Review Before You Send and Share Date, March 2025. The first checks a message before it goes out. The second lets you send the details of a date to someone you trust (TechCrunch, 2025).
- Photo verification. It exists, but we found no date for when it arrived (Bumble, undated).
Tinder’s safety features
- Photo Verification, January 2020. A selfie matched to a set pose earns a blue check. Tinder announced it on January 23, 2020 as rolling out in test markets first and more widely through the year, and later moved to a video selfie (Tinder, 2020).
- “Are You Sure?”, 2021. Asks you to reconsider a message its system flags, before you send it (Axios, 2021).
- ID Verification, 2023 to 2024. Piloted in Australia and New Zealand from fall 2023, then announced on February 20, 2024 for the US, UK, Brazil and Mexico, with rollout over the spring and summer. It is voluntary except where the law requires it, as it does in Japan, where TechCrunch reports Tinder has checked IDs since 2019 (Tinder, 2024; TechCrunch, 2024).
- Face Check, October 2025. A video selfie that, according to Tinder, checks you are a live person, matches your face to your photos and flags the same face on several accounts. Tinder says it is required for all new users in seven countries and California. Tinder also says that, together with its other safety measures, it brought over 60% less exposure to bad actors. That figure is Tinder’s, and we saw no method (Tinder, 2025).
Side by side, the comparison that holds up is short. Both apps check a message before you send it. Both offer a selfie badge. Only Tinder has made face verification mandatory anywhere, for new users in seven countries and California (Tinder, 2025). Only Bumble offers a government-ID badge in the US that we could confirm (TechCrunch, 2025). Tinder announced one for the US in 2024, and we did not confirm its status since (Tinder, 2024).
Our view: none of this settles which app is safer, and we do not claim it does. The effect figures come from the companies themselves, and we found no outside data comparing what happens to people on each app.
Who is on each: the UK numbers
The only independent figures we found that count these apps’ audiences by name come from Ofcom, the UK communications regulator. Its Online Nation 2025 report was published on December 10, 2025, and uses data for May 2025. We read its figures in a summary, not in the report itself.
In May 2025, 11% of UK online adults visited a dating service. Tinder reached 3.1% of them, down from 5.2% in May 2023, which left it only marginally ahead of Hinge, also at 3.1%. Visitors to dating services as a whole were 68% male, and on Tinder men outnumbered women about three to one. Among women, Hinge reached 2.7% and Bumble 1.6%, with Tinder third (Ofcom, 2025).
A year earlier, Ofcom’s summary of its May 2024 data counted 1.9 million UK adults on Tinder, 1.4 million on Hinge and 1.1 million on Bumble. It also found that 57% of Bumble’s visitors visited Tinder as well (Ofcom, 2024).
Our reading: in the UK, Tinder has gone from a clear first place to a dead heat with Hinge, and its audience is mostly men. More than half of Bumble’s visitors were also on Tinder, so for many people this was never an either-or. Among women, Hinge leads both. All of these figures count visits in a single month. They do not count active daters, matches or relationships.
For the US, there is nothing equivalent. Neither company publishes a gender split, and Pew Research Center’s US survey does not split each app’s users by gender (Pew Research Center, 2023). Nobody outside the companies knows what share of Tinder’s or Bumble’s US users are men, whatever figure a ranking page gives.
What users say
Four threads, all on Mumsnet, a UK parenting forum used mostly by women. They are anecdotes, paraphrased in one sentence each.
- Mumsnet, April 2025, 58 replies. Posters in a thread asking whether Tinder was worth it said it gave them better matches and fewer inappropriate messages than Bumble and Plenty of Fish (Mumsnet, 2025a).
- Mumsnet, June 2024, last reply April 2025. Posters found Tinder’s profiles scary, and one said older men on Bumble brought up sex fantasies without being asked (Mumsnet, 2024).
- Mumsnet, August 2025, last reply July 2026. Bumble came across as the app women control, and Tinder as the one for people after something casual (Mumsnet, 2025b).
- Mumsnet, December 2023 to January 2024. Most posters preferred Bumble and Hinge to Tinder, and one rated Bumble the best of a poor lot (Mumsnet, 2023).
Our reading: the threads disagree about which app treated them better, and they agree on what Bumble is. Where they describe it at all, they describe it by the women-first rule or its old 24-hour timer. The two ranking pages we read most closely do the same, one of them in an update dated September 3, 2026. That shared picture is out of date, and this page updates it.
Which one for what
Our view, by situation. None of it is measured. It follows from the rules, dates and counts above.
- You want the yes before anyone writes. Either app. Both now let either person write first after a match (Bumble Inc., 2026b). The difference is Bumble’s 72-hour clock.
- You want fewer dead matches. Bumble. A match nobody opens expires after 72 hours (Bumble Inc., 2026b), so the list fills up more slowly with matches that go nowhere. Tinder’s matches do not expire.
- You want the largest pool. Tinder, on every count we have, though in the UK it has lost its clear lead over Hinge and men outnumber women about three to one among its visitors (Ofcom, 2025).
- You are a woman in the UK. Ofcom’s figures point to Hinge first and Bumble second, with Tinder third among women (Ofcom, 2025).
- Verification matters most to you. Tinder where Face Check is mandatory, because Tinder says every new account there must pass a video-selfie check (Tinder, 2025). Bumble’s ID badge in the eleven countries on its list, if you filter for it (TechCrunch, 2025).
- You are in Sweden. Sweden was not among the countries where Bumble launched its ID badge, and we could not confirm that it has arrived since (TechCrunch, 2025). We found no Swedish user count for either app. Our guide to dating apps in Sweden covers the local alternatives.
- You are wondering about Hinge. In the UK it now matches Tinder’s reach and leads among women, so it belongs in the decision (Ofcom, 2025). Our Hinge vs Tinder and Hinge vs Bumble comparisons set it against each.
How to use this
Our rule of thumb: five habits that follow from the rules above.
- One app for two weeks. Our guess at long enough to see who is actually near you. More than half of Bumble’s UK visitors were also on Tinder (Ofcom, 2024), so running both at once may mostly show you the same people twice.
- The 72-hour clock as a feature, not a threat. On Bumble, a match nobody opens closes itself after three days (Bumble Inc., 2026b). The app makes the decision, and nobody has to send a no.
- A selfie badge as a minimum before meeting. Both apps offer one, and asking a match to verify costs nothing. On Bumble you can also ask for the ID check in the countries that have it (TechCrunch, 2025).
- The price table before paying. The prices on our Hinge vs Bumble page and our app pages are dated October 4, 2026. The store listings do not name billing periods, so check the period in the app before paying.
- The news pages for changes after October 2026. Bumble has not said when its new opening rule reaches each country, and the possible sale is still open. This page is dated for a reason.
Common questions
Is Bumble doing better than Tinder?
Not by the filings. In the second quarter of 2026, Bumble Inc.'s revenue fell 15.2% and its paying users fell 16.4%, to 3.2 million (Bumble Inc., 2026a). Tinder's daily active users fell 4% year over year, which Match Group called its best result in ten quarters (Match Group, 2026). The two figures measure different things, but neither app is growing. Reuters has also reported that Bumble is exploring a sale (Reuters, 2026).
Why is Tinder $500 a month?
No Tinder plan costs that in any store listing we read. Our Tinder page has the App Store prices from October 4, 2026, and nothing there comes close (Apple App Store, 2026). Our reading: it comes from adding a top-tier subscription and in-app extras such as Boosts and Super Likes together. A class action in California alleged age-based pricing and ended in a settlement approved in June 2026 (Mealey's, 2026).
Is Bumble a dating or hookup site?
Bumble presents itself as a dating app (Apple App Store, 2026). We found no study of intent that includes Bumble; the one study of motives we found covers only Tinder users, and it is on our Hinge vs Tinder page. Forum threads split: in one, Tinder was the casual app (Mumsnet, 2025b); in another, a poster said older men on Bumble raised sex unprompted (Mumsnet, 2024).
What is the 3-3-3 rule on Tinder?
The rule comes from social media, not from Tinder: the versions online disagree (most say three dates, three weeks, three months), the outlets that credit anyone credit different TikTok creators, and Tinder's own FAQ has no such rule (Tinder, 2026b). The rules Tinder does have are simpler. A match needs a right swipe from both people, then either can write, Tinder's paid Platinum tier aside, and the match does not expire. On Bumble, since August 11, 2026, a new match has 72 hours before it does (Bumble Inc., 2026b).
Is 75% of Tinder users male?
For the US, nobody outside the companies knows. Neither Match Group nor Bumble publishes a gender split, and we found no independent US figure by app. The nearest number is British and covers one month: in Ofcom's data for May 2025, men outnumbered women about three to one among Tinder's UK visitors (Ofcom, 2025). We read that figure in a summary of Ofcom's report. It counts visits, not active users, and says nothing about other countries.
