Hinge vs Tinder in 2026: same owner, different rules, which to pick
Hinge and Tinder share an owner and disagree on when you write. On Tinder you message after a match. On Hinge a like can carry your opening line and free accounts get eight a day. Tinder is losing daily users and adding daily curated picks; Hinge's revenue is growing. The choice is how you want to start.
We did not use either app for this page. We looked at what Hinge and Tinder publish about their own rules, Match Group’s latest quarterly results, the research we could find and four forum threads. Anything that is our opinion is labeled as ours.
Hinge vs Tinder: the differences that change what you do
Our view: the main difference is when you find out whether someone is interested. On Tinder, two people swipe right on each other, and only then can either of them write, Platinum aside (Tinder, 2026b). On Hinge, whoever sends the first like, with or without a comment, sends it without knowing whether the interest is mutual (Hinge, 2026b). Tinder gives you the yes first. Hinge asks for the effort first.
The second difference is what each app expects of you afterward. Free Hinge accounts get eight likes a day, and under Your Turn Limits you cannot send or receive new likes while eight or more chats are waiting on your reply (Hinge, 2026b; Hinge, 2024a; Hinge, 2024c). We found nothing on Tinder that limits unanswered chats, and our Tinder page has the rest of its rules. Both apps belong to Match Group (Match Group, 2026), a detail the ranking page with the most numbers, Private Internet Access, does not mention (Private Internet Access, 2025).

Same owner, different rules
Match Group owns both, and its second quarter of 2026 had them moving apart. Tinder’s daily active users fell 4% year over year, which Match Group called the smallest decline in ten quarters. Hinge’s revenue rose 22% and its monthly active users 13%, and revenue in Hinge’s European expansion markets, Sweden among them, rose 86% (Match Group, 2026). One app is counted in daily users and the other in monthly users, so the figures do not line up, but the directions are plain. Our news item on the quarter has the rest.
The business model is the same on both. Each is free with limits and sells subscriptions that lift them: Hinge+ and others on Hinge, and Plus, Gold and Platinum on Tinder (Apple App Store, 2026; Tinder, 2026b).
Tinder had already said where it is heading. At Tinder Sparks, its first product keynote, on March 12, 2026, it announced Chemistry, daily recommendations picked by AI, expanding from Australia and New Zealand to the US and Canada. The same keynote listed Learning Mode, Music and Astrology modes, an Events beta in Los Angeles, a test of video speed dating planned for later that spring, and a profile redesign (Tinder, 2026a). By August, Match Group said Events were live in the US and Europe (Match Group, 2026). We did not check which of the other features has reached which country since.
A daily curated pick is something Hinge has offered since July 11, 2018. Its Most Compatible feature suggests one person a day, and Hinge says it rests on a “Nobel-Prize-winning algorithm” (Hinge, 2026b); when the feature launched, TechCrunch identified that as the Gale-Shapley method, a textbook way of pairing two groups by how each side ranks the other (TechCrunch, 2018). How well it works inside Hinge, only Hinge has said.
Tinder has borrowed in this direction before. It announced Relationship Goals, a profile field for what you are looking for, on December 14, 2022, and TechCrunch’s headline said it was following in Hinge’s footsteps (TechCrunch, 2022).
Our reading: Tinder is adding what Hinge is known for, so the split between a swipe app and a relationship app is blurrier than it was. Some of the differences are shrinking. The one about who has to move before knowing the answer is not.
How a conversation starts on each
On Hinge, the like and the first message can be the same thing. You like one photo, prompt answer or voice prompt, and if you add a comment it arrives attached to what it is about (Hinge, 2026b; Apple App Store, 2026). Prompts are short questions people answer on their profiles. A like without a comment is allowed, and it still uses one of the eight a free account gets each day. Hinge says that when its members had more free likes a day their matches were worse, and that eight is the number it settled on; that is Hinge’s claim, with no method given (Hinge, 2026b).
Hinge also helps with the opener now. Since December 8, 2025, Convo Starters gives three tips when you send a like (Hinge, 2025a). Once chats are going, Your Turn Limits pauses new likes while eight or more of them wait on you (Hinge, 2024c). Our Hinge page has how that rule works and what Hinge claims for it.
On Tinder, the order runs the other way. You swipe, and if the other person swiped right on you too, it is a match; after that, either of you can write (Tinder, 2026b). Writing to someone before a match is a Platinum feature, so it costs money (Tinder, 2026b). Free accounts can like a limited number of profiles, and Tinder does not say how many (Tinder, 2026b). At Sparks, Tinder also showed Tinder Connect, which pulls in Duolingo, Beli and Spotify activity as conversation material (Tinder, 2026a).
What each asks of you follows from that order. On Hinge you put in the work before you know whether it is mutual, a point one Mumsnet poster made in May 2024 (Mumsnet, 2024a). On Tinder you know first, and someone still has to write the first line. Our view: Hinge suits people who like writing one specific line about one specific thing, and the same skill matters on Tinder, only after the match. Our guide to dating app opening lines is about that line.
Who is on each, and what no one can measure
The independent numbers we have cover online dating as a whole. In Pew Research Center’s US survey, fielded in July 2022, 30% of adults said they had ever used a dating site or app, and 9% had used one in the past year (Pew Research Center, 2023). Those are answers about any app, given in 2022, and they do not count who is on Hinge or Tinder today. The same survey’s shares by app, including by age, are on our Hinge vs Bumble page, next to the price table, so we do not repeat them here.
One study asks what Tinder users want, and only Tinder users. Morlat, Limniou and Alison (2026) surveyed 305 Tinder users aged 18 to 30, recruited by a University of Liverpool team through social media and campus posters; 201 were women and 94 men. Each picked a primary motivation for using Tinder from three options. Among the men, 67.0% chose casual sex and 28.7% a serious relationship. Among the women, 51.7% chose a serious relationship and 38.3% casual sex. The volunteers chose to take part, the study covers Tinder alone, and it has no Hinge group, so it describes one app’s users and says nothing about the other’s.
The closest research on volume is app-neutral. Across three studies, Pronk and Denissen (2020) found that the chance of accepting a profile fell by about 27% from the first option in a sequence to the last, partly because people grew less satisfied with the pictures as they went. Our reading: that is context for a swipe deck, which puts profile after profile in front of you, and it is not evidence about Tinder or Hinge.
What nobody can measure from outside is the comparison people search for. We found no peer-reviewed study comparing Hinge with Tinder, and no data from Match Group on how many users of either end up together. The one company that could compare them from the inside owns both, and it has published no such comparison that we found. Of the three ranking pages we read, the one with the most numbers gives user counts and match rates for both apps that trace back to aggregator blogs rather than to company filings (Private Internet Access, 2025), so none of those numbers appear here.
What users say
Four forum threads, all of them anecdotes and labeled that way. Three are on Mumsnet, a UK forum used mostly by women, and one is on The Student Room, a UK student forum. One sentence each, paraphrased.
- Mumsnet, May 15, 2024. A London woman in her thirties had no Hinge matches after four days; others replied that Tinder gave them plenty, and one made the point above about Hinge asking for work before you know it is mutual (Mumsnet, 2024a).
- Mumsnet, June 9, 2024, last reply May 19, 2026. Several posters said Hinge beat Tinder for them, and one pointed out that you cannot share photos in a Hinge chat (Mumsnet, 2024b).
- The Student Room, undated. Posters found that likes run out fast on Hinge, and one reply split the two as Tinder for casual and Hinge for something committed (The Student Room, undated).
- Mumsnet, April 27, 2025. Hinge and Bumble came out as the least bad of the options, and one poster called Tinder’s hookup reputation out of date (Mumsnet, 2025).
Our reading: the threads mostly describe the rules from the inside. The eight likes go quickly, Hinge wants your move before you know whether it is mutual, and to these posters Tinder handed out matches more easily. Four threads measure nothing, and they argue about Tinder’s reputation in both directions.
Which one for what
By situation. None of it is measured; it follows from the rules above and from what we could not find. On our five scores, Hinge is 4, 3, 3, 3 and 2 and Tinder 2, 3, 5, 3 and 4, in the order serious, cost, pool, women and ghosting; the app pages explain each.
- You want to know it is mutual before you write. Our view: Tinder. The match comes first and the message second (Tinder, 2026b), so, outside Platinum, you only write to someone who already said yes.
- You want fewer, slower matches and to open with a comment. Our view: Hinge. Eight free likes a day make you choose, and a comment on one prompt gives the other person something to answer (Hinge, 2026b).
- You keep a lot of chats going at once. Hinge pauses new likes once eight or more chats wait on your reply (Hinge, 2024c), and we found nothing like that on Tinder. Our view: Tinder if you want the app to stay out of it, Hinge if you want something that makes you answer.
- You are over 40. We found no age data by country from either app, and Pew’s US figures by app and age are on our Hinge vs Bumble page. Our view: age is no reason to pick one over the other; the profiles that show up near you are the data that counts.
- You are in Sweden. We found no Swedish user count for either app, so nobody outside Match Group can say how big either pool is where you live. Our guide to dating apps in Sweden covers the local alternatives. Our view: the free tier of each is the cheapest way to find out.
- You want the cheapest paid tier. The price table on our Hinge vs Bumble page lists App Store prices for both from October 4, 2026, and no US item in it names a billing period (Apple App Store, 2026). Our view: compare starting prices there, then check the period in the app before paying.
- You are choosing between Tinder and Bumble. Our Tinder vs Bumble page covers that pair, including what changed when Bumble dropped its women-first rule.
How to use this
Our view: four steps that follow from the rules above.
- One app for two weeks. Our guess at long enough to see who is near you and what the rules are like to live with. Running both at once makes it hard to tell which one is doing the work.
- Eight likes with a comment rather than eight bare likes. A bare like uses up one of the eight, just as a commented one does (Hinge, 2026b). Only one of them gives the other person something to answer.
- A match on Tinder as the start, not the result. A match means you both swiped right (Tinder, 2026b). Nothing in the app makes either of you write, so somebody has to.
- The price table before paying. Our Hinge vs Bumble page has the list prices for both apps from October 4, 2026. The listings name no billing period, so the app itself is the last place to check.
Common questions
Is Hinge actually better than Tinder?
Nobody has measured it. We found no peer-reviewed study comparing the two, and no data on outcomes from Match Group, which owns both. What differs is timing. On Tinder you know the interest is mutual before anyone writes; on Hinge the first like, with or without a comment, goes out before you know. Our view: Hinge suits people who would rather write one good line than swipe, Tinder people who want the yes first.
Is Tinder or Hinge better for serious relationships?
The reputation says Hinge, and it comes mostly from Hinge itself. We found no outcome data for either app. The only study we found is Tinder-only: Morlat, Limniou and Alison (2026) surveyed 305 Tinder users aged 18 to 30, and 51.7% of the women but 28.7% of the men gave a serious relationship as their main reason for using it. Nothing comparable covers Hinge. Hinge's Your Turn Limits and Tinder's Relationship Goals field are product rules, not results.
What is the 8 rule on Hinge?
It can mean either of two Hinge rules. Free accounts get eight likes a day, according to Hinge's mission page (Hinge, 2026b). Under Your Turn Limits, rolled out globally on September 18, 2024, you cannot send or receive new likes while eight or more chats are waiting on your reply, until you answer or end some of them (Hinge, 2024a; Hinge, 2024c). Our Hinge vs Bumble page has more on both.
Is 40 too old for Hinge?
No. Hinge publishes no age breakdown, so there is no Hinge figure that makes 40 too old, and no app we looked at publishes age data by country. The independent numbers come from Pew Research Center's US survey, and our Hinge vs Bumble page sets out what it found by age and app. Our view: the profiles in your own area are the age data that counts, and the free tier is enough to look.
How much is 1 month of Hinge?
We cannot give a one-month price, because the App Store does not label Hinge's billing periods (Apple App Store, 2026). Our Hinge vs Bumble page has the US price table from October 4, 2026, with the listed prices for Hinge+ and the other items, and our Hinge page has the Swedish prices from the same day. HingeX, Hinge's higher tier, did not appear in the US list. Before paying, the app is where to check what period a price covers.
