Facebook Dating: how it works and why it is not showing up

Updated · 10 min read

Meta says Facebook Dating is a feature inside the Facebook app for Android and iPhone, with no separate app and no desktop version. Its requirements are 18 or older, an account in good standing at least 30 days old and a listed country. When it is missing, Meta's own list of reasons points at the account.

Facebook Dating goes missing for one of a handful of reasons Meta names: age, a new or inactive account, a policy violation, a country outside Meta’s list, or using a computer. Meta’s help pages, read October 5, 2026, are the basis here, and the rest is labeled ours. The checklist runs through every condition Meta names, in our order, cheapest check first.

Is Facebook Dating still available?

Yes. Meta’s help page “Who can use Facebook Dating” says the feature is available from the Facebook app for Android or iPhone, in many countries, for adults with active Facebook accounts. Its country list named 56 countries and territories when we read it on October 5, 2026, the US, the UK and Canada among them (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).

Meta announced the European launch on October 21, 2020, for 32 European countries, the UK included (Meta, 2020). We found no announcement of a closure.

The latest product news from Meta we found is a newsroom post dated September 22, 2025. It introduced a dating assistant and Meet Cute, which Meta says works by “automatically matching you with a surprise match based on our personalized matching algorithm.” Meta wrote that the assistant “will begin rolling out gradually in the US and Canada” and named no other country for either feature (Meta, 2025). We found nothing from Meta that brings them to the UK.

We found no source for a Facebook Dating shutdown rumor. Our reading: it most likely grows from single accounts where the Dating entry disappeared, which feels like a shutdown from the inside. Meta’s help page treats that situation as restricted access.

How does Facebook Dating work?

Facebook Dating is a feature inside the Facebook app with a profile of its own. You open it from your existing Facebook account, but the Dating profile is separate from your Facebook profile, and conversations in Dating are kept apart from Messenger (Meta Help Center, “How Facebook Dating is different from Facebook”). Who can see that profile is covered further down. We read the page in Swedish, where Meta calls the product Facebook Dejting; the English page has the same id.

To get in, Meta requires you to be at least 18, to have a Facebook account in good standing that is at least 30 days old and to live in a country where Dating is available. You also have to let Meta use your Facebook information. Decline, and Meta says some of your info is deleted, such as your Dating profile, matches, likes, crushes and Dating conversations (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).

Meta’s help center also lists articles on the dating assistant, on a feature called Match Anywhere, on crushes and on creating or deleting a profile. We did not read those, and beyond the Meet Cute line above, Meta’s pages do not explain how matching works.

Is Facebook Dating free?

Meta says it is. Its September 22, 2025 newsroom post calls Facebook Dating “A free dating experience within the Facebook app” (Meta, 2025). As of October 5, 2026, we found no paid tier, no Dating subscription and no announcement of either.

The post does not say how the feature earns money, and we found no other Meta statement that does. Our reading: free means there is nothing to buy inside Dating, and what Meta gets in return is a question we found no answer to in Meta’s pages.

How that compares with the free tiers of the apps we score is on our best free dating apps page.

How do you find Facebook Dating?

On your phone. Meta’s “how to find” page gives three steps: log into the Facebook app on your mobile device, tap the menu, then tap Dating. You can also search for “Facebook Dating” inside the app. The same page says Dating is only available in the Facebook apps for Android and iPhone and cannot be opened on a computer (Meta, “Find Facebook Dating”).

If Dating appears in neither the menu nor the search, you are looking at an access problem, and the next section takes Meta’s reasons one at a time.

Why is Facebook Dating not showing up? Check in this order

Each step says whose words it rests on. “Meta:” means a line from Meta’s help pages, read October 5, 2026. “Our reading:” means our interpretation.

  1. Are you on a computer? Meta: Dating runs only in the Facebook apps for Android and iPhone (Meta, “Find Facebook Dating”).
  2. Are you 18 or older? Meta: you must be at least 18, and “You aren’t aged 18 or older” is the first reason Meta gives when someone cannot access Dating (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).
  3. Is the account at least 30 days old, active and in good standing? Meta: all three are conditions, and “You have a new or inactive account” is on Meta’s list of reasons (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).
  4. Do you live in a listed country? Meta: you must live in a country where Dating is available. The help page listed 56 countries and territories on October 5, 2026 (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).
  5. Has the account gone against Meta’s rules? Meta: “We may restrict which Facebook accounts can access Dating.” One listed reason is going against Meta’s Terms of Service, Community Standards or other policies. Meta’s safety page separately says you must not mislead others about who you are, including your name, age or location, and Meta’s pages do not tie that to losing access (Meta Help Center, “Keeping Facebook Dating safe”).
  6. Did you delete a Dating profile in the last seven days? Meta: you can’t make a new one for seven days, and Facebook shows a message that the limit has been reached (Meta Help Center, “Detta händer om du tar bort din Facebook Dejting-profil”).
  7. Did you decline the data permission? Meta: Dating requires that you allow Meta to use your Facebook info; without it, your Dating profile, matches and conversations are among what gets deleted (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”).
  8. Do other accounts on the same phone have Dating? Our reading: then the account is the likely cause, and we found no way for a user to see the reason; only Meta can say. The two forum threads we opened point the same way. In a Tom’s Guide forum thread from January 30, 2021, marked solved with the advice to contact Facebook, one user got Dating on a new account on the same device (Tom’s Guide Forum, 2021). In a Swedish Flashback thread started November 10, 2020 and running to March 2022, users described Dating missing from one account across several devices while others in the household had it (Flashback Forum, 2020).

The same two threads also try fixes that Meta’s pages do not mention, so we do not list them as fixes: clearing the cache, reinstalling the Facebook app, joining dating groups on Facebook and changing a name with letters like å, ä or ö, which the Flashback thread tested and dropped. Waiting helps only when the account itself is younger than 30 days; for an older account, nothing in Meta’s pages suggests that waiting does anything.

A different problem is a Dating profile that works but seems invisible. The Meta pages we read say nothing about how profiles are ranked or how often they are shown, so we have no checklist for that.

Can your friends see your Dating profile?

Only in one case Meta describes: once you and a match are Facebook friends, that match, and Meta’s suggested matches, can still see your Dating profile (Meta Help Center, “How Facebook Dating is different from Facebook”). Outside that case, the same page says current friends and people who do not use Dating cannot see the profile, and Dating activity stays out of the Facebook feed.

The data permission exists for the same reason, in Meta’s telling. It uses your Facebook info “so that we don’t do things such as suggest current Facebook friends within Dating or notify them that you’ve joined” (Meta Help Center, “Who can use Facebook Dating”). Our view: a friend request between matches is the one step that lowers the wall, whoever sends it, so it is worth a second thought.

How do you delete Facebook Dating without deleting Facebook?

Seven days is the number to know first: after you delete a Dating profile, Meta says you cannot create a new one for seven days, and the app shows a message that the limit has been reached if you try (Meta Help Center, “Detta händer om du tar bort din Facebook Dejting-profil”). The same page lists what goes with the profile, your Dating answers, likes, matches and conversations, none of it recoverable, while your matches keep their copy of the conversations.

The Facebook account is a separate matter. Meta’s page on how Dating differs from Facebook says you can delete the Dating profile without touching the account, while deleting the Facebook account removes the Dating profile too (Meta Help Center, “How Facebook Dating is different from Facebook”).

How many people use Facebook Dating?

We found no independent count, for the US or anywhere else. Pew Research Center surveyed 6,034 US adults from July 5 to 17, 2022 and asked online daters about eight named services: Tinder, Match, Bumble, OkCupid, eharmony, Hinge, Grindr and HER (Pew, 2023). Facebook Dating was not among them, so Pew did not ask about it, and we found no figure for Facebook Dating in the report.

The figures that exist are Meta’s. As of October 2020, Meta said over 1.5 billion matches had been created since launch across the 20 countries where the feature was then available (Meta, 2020). In its September 22, 2025 post, Meta wrote that “Young adult matches are up 10% year over year” and that hundreds of thousands of young adults in the US and Canada create Facebook Dating profiles every month (Meta, 2025). The post publishes no method for either, and Meta does not define young adult or name the comparison year.

Forbes Health’s 2026 list puts Facebook Dating first, as “Best Dating Platform Overall,” on a method that gives cost 30% of the weight, and Forbes discloses that it earns commissions (Forbes Health, 2026). That is a ranking, not a count of users.

For the apps we do score, and Pew’s count of who has used them, see best dating apps.

How to use this

  1. Check access before trying any fix. Facebook phone app, age, account age and standing, country, a recent deletion. (Our order; each condition is Meta’s, from help pages read October 5, 2026.)
  2. Write the Dating profile as its own thing. A couple of specific details say more than a copy of your Facebook bio; our dating profile examples show what we mean. (Our view.)
  3. Keep the chat in Dating until you have met. Dating conversations are separate from Messenger, and a Facebook friend request to a match is the step Meta names as the exception to Dating’s privacy. For the texting itself, see how to flirt over text. (Our view; Meta’s page says Dating chats are separate from Messenger and names the friend request as the exception.)
  4. Treat a match here like any other match. Our first date tips cover safety and who pays, and first date ideas cover where to go. (Our view.)

Common questions

Why is Facebook Dating not showing up?

Meta lists three reasons on its help page about who can use Facebook Dating: you are under 18, your account is new or inactive, or you went against Meta's terms or policies. Meta also requires an account at least 30 days old, a listed country and the Facebook app for Android or iPhone, since Dating does not work on a computer. Our reading: if other accounts on the same phone have Dating, the block most likely sits on your account.

Is Facebook Dating free?

Meta says it is. In a newsroom post dated September 22, 2025, Meta called Facebook Dating a free dating experience within the Facebook app, and as of October 5, 2026 we found no paid tier or Dating subscription. Meta does not say how the feature earns money. We have not reviewed or scored Facebook Dating, so this is Meta's description of its own product.

Is Facebook Dating still available in 2026?

Yes, according to Meta. Its help page, read October 5, 2026, says Facebook Dating is available in the Facebook app for Android and iPhone and lists 56 countries and territories, including the US, the UK and Canada. We found no announcement of a closure. If the feature has vanished from your menu, Meta's help page points to account reasons, such as age, a new or inactive account or a policy violation.

Can my Facebook friends see my Dating profile?

Not according to Meta. Its help page on how Dating differs from Facebook says your current Facebook friends and people who do not use Dating cannot see your Dating profile, and your Dating activity does not appear in your Facebook feed. The exception Meta names: if you become Facebook friends with someone you matched with, your matches or suggested matches in Dating can still see your Dating profile.

Why am I not visible on Facebook Dating?

That is a different problem from Dating missing from your menu. The Meta pages we read on October 5, 2026 say nothing about how profiles are ranked or how often they are shown, so we cannot say why a profile gets few views. What Meta does say: Dating does not suggest your current Facebook friends, and a deleted profile cannot be replaced for seven days. Its September 2025 post mentions a personalized matching algorithm without explaining it.
