What to wear on a first date: outfit ideas by venue

Updated · 9 min read

Dress one step above the venue, in clothes you already move well in. That is our view, not a finding: we found no study linking an outfit to how a first date goes, and the one famous effect, red, shrank when researchers tried to repeat it. Below: outfit ideas by venue, an unknown-plan fallback and a checklist.

What should you wear on a first date?

Our view: dress one step above the venue, in clothes you have already worn and moved in. For a coffee, that means what you would wear to meet a friend, plus one thing you picked on purpose. For a restaurant, a little more. For a museum or a market, whatever you can stand in for two hours. The rule is ours because we looked for studies linking an outfit to how a first date goes and found none. So this page keeps evidence and taste apart, and labels the taste. The advice does not split by gender either, because nothing we found shows that it should.

Of the four pages we read for this search, three are outfit lists and one is a dating-site guide. Time Out London’s six tips, published May 28, 2015, were written with a fashion shopping site and link to its products. Refinery29’s piece from August 25, 2010, links to retailers. Blavity’s six outfits, published March 30, 2025, are written for women only. eharmony’s guide, dated March 11, 2025, names several studies but links none of them and gives no sample sizes. We found no page that separates evidence from taste.

First date outfit ideas by venue

Start from where you are going. The table is our view, with one reason per row and the thing most likely to go wrong.

VenueWhat works (our view)WhyWatch out for
Coffee or walkJeans or chinos, a sweater or casual shirt, sneakers (trainers in the UK) or boots you have walked inA coffee often turns into a walk, and you want to be able to say yes to itRain, wind and paths that turn to mud
Bar or drinksOne step up from daytime: dark jeans or dress pants, a shirt or top you would wear out with friends, a jacketBars are dim and loud, so comfort carries more weight than detailStanding for an hour, a cold walk between bars, high stools
RestaurantThe smartest row, matched to the place: check its photos or website firstYou sit facing each other for an hour or two, so what shows above the table and what sits comfortably matter mostAnything that gets uncomfortable after a meal, cuffs near sauce, cold air conditioning
Museum, market or activityDaytime casual, good shoes and a layer you can carryYou walk and stand most of the time, often moving between indoors and outHard floors, coat-check lines, an activity that needs room to move (check what it involves)
Unknown planLayers, shoes you can walk a mile in, nothing that only works in one settingIt covers the likely plans without looking wrong in any of themSee the next section

If the restaurant lists a dress code on its website, that beats every row here.

The forum threads we read point the same way. Mumsnet is a British parenting forum, so these are people’s advice, not a sample. In an April 10, 2023 thread with 16 replies, a poster facing a surprise coffee-and-walk date was told that jeans and a nice top with sneakers would do, and that they were overthinking it (Mumsnet, April 2023). In a February 20, 2023 thread with 10 replies, posters called formal black pants too much for a daytime lunch and a walk, and suggested jeans and comfortable footwear (Mumsnet, February 2023). In a February 19, 2024 thread with 51 replies about a coffee date, the advice that carried was to wear your usual style, dressed up a little (Mumsnet, 2024).

For choosing the venue in the first place, and for a plan B when it rains, see our first date ideas.

What if you do not know the plan?

Dress for the range of likely plans: layers, shoes you can walk a mile in, and one option for changing. A shirt or knit over a T-shirt covers a warm bar and a cold walk home. Shoes you have already walked in cover a market, a museum and the long way to the station. The change option can be as small as a top folded into a bag. If all you were told is “something casual”, the coffee row in the table is a safe reading.

The harder case is a plan with two halves, such as an activity and then dinner. In an August 19, 2026 Mumsnet thread with 71 replies about a date that started with padel and moved on to dinner, posters suggested either athletic clothes or a dress that would pass in both places (Mumsnet, 2026). Either works. Wear the activity clothes and bring a top for the restaurant, or pick clothes that pass in both places and accept that you will not be the sharpest dresser on the court.

Our rule of thumb: ask what the plan is. “Where are we going, so I know what to wear?” is a normal question to send. The answer tells you something too, such as whether there is a plan at all.

Does what you wear change how they see you?

We found no study that tests whether an outfit changes how a date sees you, and the research that comes up on the question is about something else. We read the meta-analysis below in full and the other studies in their abstracts.

In Willis and Todorov’s five experiments, ratings of faces made after 100 milliseconds correlated highly with ratings made without a time limit, and extra viewing time did not significantly raise the correlations, though it raised confidence (Willis & Todorov, 2006). That is a finding about faces, and we do not stretch it to clothes.

The nearest thing to clothing research is “enclothed cognition”, the idea that what you wear changes how you think. In Adam and Galinsky’s three experiments, people wearing a lab coat did better on an attention task than people without one, and a coat described as a doctor’s coat beat the same coat described as a painter’s coat (Adam & Galinsky, 2012). A preregistered direct replication of the Stroop version found no effect of the coat, in a design that could detect effects as small as seven milliseconds (Burns et al., 2019).

Even the original measured the wearer, not anyone looking at them. We found no study that links an outfit to whether a first date leads to a second.

Our reading: the likeliest benefit is practical, not psychological. Clothes you trust are one less thing to check, adjust or think about while someone is talking to you. If the worry is really about the date rather than the clothes, our first date tips cover nerves.

Does the color red work on a first date?

Not reliably. The evidence points to a small effect in lab ratings at most, and the repeat studies disagree.

In five experiments, Elliot and Niesta reported that men rated women as more attractive and more sexually desirable when red was present than with other colors, and that the men seemed unaware of it (Elliot & Niesta, 2008). Peperkoorn, Roberts and Pollet then ran three studies with 830 men in total, showing a woman in red, white and black, and found no red effect on how attractive or sexually receptive she was rated (Peperkoorn et al., 2016).

A 2018 meta-analysis pooled the studies its authors could find. For men rating women, across 2,961 participants, the average effect was d = 0.26, which is small, with large differences between studies (Lehmann et al., 2018). For women rating men, across 2,739 participants, it was d = 0.13, a very small effect with evidence that the published estimate is inflated (Lehmann et al., 2018). Elliot, who ran the 2008 experiments, is one of the meta-analysis’s authors.

All of it measures people rating strangers in a lab, which is a long way from two people at a table. In those studies the color was the variable the researchers changed; on a date it is one detail among many. The dating-site and fashion pages we opened mention red as a first-date color without a word about replication.

Our reading: red is not a plan. Wear it if you like wearing it, and apply the same test to every other color.

What not to wear on a first date?

Our view: five things to leave at home, each with the reason it made the list.

  • Anything you keep adjusting. A strap that slips, a collar that will not sit, a hem you tug. You will do it all evening.
  • Shoes you have not walked in. New shoes tend to pick the first date to find out where they rub.
  • Weather that beats the clothes. Suede under a rain forecast, thin soles on cobblestones, a light jacket for an evening that turns cold.
  • Clothes you would not sit in for two hours. Dinner and drinks are mostly sitting.
  • Strong scent in a small room. A bar table is closer than it looks.

Posters in the February 20, 2023 Mumsnet thread added one more item: nothing itchy (Mumsnet, February 2023).

Should you buy a new outfit for a first date?

We found no survey on this with a published method. Retailers publish figures on how many people buy a new outfit for a first date and how much they spend, and since they sell the outfits, we do not repeat them.

Our view: wear something you have worn before, because you already know how it behaves when you sit, walk and get caught in the rain. If you do buy something, wear it around the house for an evening first.

First date outfit checklist

The list above turned into checks, plus three practical ones. Ours, not anyone’s research:

  • Nothing on the list above: nothing you adjust, nothing unworn, nothing the weather beats, nothing you cannot sit in, no strong scent
  • Weather checked for the hours you will be out
  • Clean and pressed, with one layer to add or remove
  • A pocket or bag for phone and keys, and the rain plan from our first date ideas page if you will be outside

How to use this

  1. Ask what the plan is, then dress one step above it. Basis: our view, and the Mumsnet threads above point the same way.
  2. Pick from clothes you have already worn, then run the checklist. Basis: our view; we found no study or survey with a method that favors a new outfit.
  3. Treat color as taste. Basis: the red research above, which shows a small effect at most and mixed replication.

Once you are dressed, our first date questions cover the talking.

Common questions

What should I wear on a first date?

Our view: dress one step above the venue, in clothes you have already worn and moved in. That means jeans and a sweater for coffee or a walk, a little more for a bar or restaurant, and layers with walkable shoes when you do not know the plan. We found no study linking an outfit to how a first date goes, so this is a practical rule, not a finding, and it does not change with gender.

What is the best color to wear on a first date?

We found no color with solid evidence behind it. Elliot and Niesta (2008) reported that red raised men's ratings of women in five lab experiments. Peperkoorn, Roberts and Pollet (2016) found no red effect across three studies with 830 men. A 2018 meta-analysis by Lehmann, Elliot and Calin-Jageman found a small effect at most, and a very small one for women rating men. Our view: wear the color you like.

What is the 3-3-3 rule for clothes?

We found no 3-3-3 rule for clothes in a source we could cite. The dating 3-3-3 rule is about a new connection, its versions disagree, and our glossary lists them with dates. For a first date outfit we use no formula, only one rule of thumb: bring a layer you can add or take off.

Is it better to be overdressed or underdressed on a first date?

Our view: aim one step above the venue, which leaves you slightly overdressed if you misjudge it. Overdressed is easier to fix, since you can take off a jacket or a layer, while underdressed has no fix halfway through dinner. If you cannot tell what the venue expects, ask where you are going; it is a normal question, and the answer settles it.

What outfits do people find most attractive on a first date?

We found no study with a published method that answers this. The question assumes a single audience, and the research we read does not identify one: the red studies measured how strangers rated photos in a lab, not dates. The Mumsnet posters we read were advising on what to wear, not rating anyone, and mostly named comfort and venue fit. Our view: an outfit you forget about once you sit down does more than one picked to impress.
