Tinder bios: good and funny examples, and what a bio actually does
A good Tinder bio, as we read it, gives a stranger one line to answer. Seven of ours follow, with what each does and risks. The one measurement: a short line beat no bio on curated London profiles in 2016. Tinder's 15 to 45 words is company data, and the 75% men figure has no primary source we found.
A Tinder bio is the free-text block on a profile. Tinder has added Interests, Relationship Goals and prompts around it, which cover some of what a bio used to have to say. Below are seven bios with the reasoning attached, and a split between the one measured fact, Tinder’s company data and vendor claims. It is one list for everyone, since we found no study that compares bio text by the writer’s sex. We did not use the app; app facts are as of October 5, 2026.
Good Tinder bio examples, annotated
All examples are ours, not tested at scale. Bumble bios have their own guide, Bumble bios and prompts, because there the bio feeds the other person’s one opener.
1. The small confession. “Learning to parallel park at 31. Moral support welcome; passengers, not yet.”
- What it does: one concrete, slightly embarrassing detail with an obvious reply: how’s it going?
- What it risks: it says nothing about what you want, so Relationship Goals has to.
2. The opinion with a question. “I rank gas-station coffee on every road trip and I’m right about all of it. Tell me your road-trip snack and I’ll tell you what it says about you.”
- What it does: an opinion to argue with and a question with a one-line answer.
- What it risks: the “what it says about you” move is common, and it works only if you deliver in the chat.
3. The flirty one. “Fair warning: I will steal exactly one of your fries. Never two. Looking for someone who orders the large.”
- What it does: flirts lightly and slips in a date idea.
- What it risks: food jokes are common, and flirting reads differently in a stranger’s voice.
4. The plain one. “Looking for something long-term. Teacher, slow texter, fast planner. If the chat is good, let’s pick a coffee place within a week.”
- What it does: states the goal and the pace, so the reader knows what is on offer before replying.
- What it risks: some will read it as rules, and it needs photos with some personality in them.
5. The borrowed prompt. “Two truths and a lie: I’ve been to 14 national parks, I can’t whistle, I once sat next to Dolly Parton on a plane. Guess the lie and you pick the first bar.”
- What it does: turns one of the three prompts Tinder named as most popular in 2023 into a game whose first move is the reply (Tinder Newsroom, 2023).
- What it risks: if it is already one of your prompts, the bio repeats it.
6. Height, answered once. “Five nine, which I mention only because everyone asks. More useful: I make my own pasta and have never once finished a crossword.”
- What it does: settles the height question and moves on to two things worth asking about.
- What it risks: it still plays the height game the forums below roll their eyes at. If you keep it, use the number you would say at the table; rounding up is what our glossary calls kittenfishing.
For the app-neutral version, a four-slot template and ten more bios, see dating profile examples.
Funny Tinder bios that do not rely on three jokes
7. Ours, not tested at scale, and written to fail. “Fluent in sarcasm. 6’1 because apparently that matters. Tacos > everything. Looking for my partner in crime.”
- Our reading of why it fails: four stock lines, three of them jokes, and no obvious reply beyond “lol”.
- The fix: one joke about something only you did, as in example 1.
Three of its four lines have close relatives in the forum threads we read. On Mumsnet, a British parenting forum, a thread on clichés men put on dating profiles, started April 4, 2022 with about 209 replies, opens with “6ft4 because apparently that matters” and “if you can’t handle sarcasm swipe left”, and one reply yawns at “looking for a partner in crime” (Mumsnet, 2022). A thread on profile icks started August 6, 2025, about 309 replies, lists “partner in crime” and “ask to find out” (Mumsnet, 2025). On The Student Room, a UK student forum, one of six replies to a “Tinder Bio” thread started February 28, 2018 would rather read a plain “Second year Law” than a forced joke or “6ft because apparently that matters” (The Student Room, 2018). Both forums are British, and Mumsnet is a parenting forum, not a Tinder sample.
None of the studies in this section looked at Tinder. In a Dutch study, 1,234 people, 93.4% of them members of the site 50PlusMatch, rated 308 real profile texts. Texts rated more original went with the writer being rated smarter and funnier, and more attractive; raters tied originality to metaphors, uncommon words and concrete self-disclosure (van der Zanden et al., 2022). A follow-up with 295 members of a dating platform found novel and plain texts equally attractive overall, because novelty that turned inappropriate read as odd (Van der Zanden & Schouten, 2023). In two earlier Dutch experiments, with 373 dating-app users and 365 adults as reported by PsyPost, profiles with language errors were rated less attractive (Van der Zanden et al., 2020; PsyPost, 2019).
Humor studies are narrower. Wilbur and Campbell coded 266 personal ads on a Canadian site and ran an experiment with 114 college students (73 women, 41 men) reading invented profiles: a joke raised women’s interest in a man’s ad, and not men’s interest in a woman’s (Wilbur & Campbell, 2011). Hall’s studies with University of Kansas students, including 51 pairs of opposite-sex strangers talking for about ten minutes, linked humor to extraversion rather than intelligence (Hall, 2015; KU News, 2015). Our reading: one joke can help, and a strained one can read as odd. The same advice for any app is under funny, without three jokes.
Short Tinder bio ideas, and Tinder’s bio limit
Our view: short can work on Tinder, since the bio is not alone on the profile, and nobody has measured it. Example 1 is one. Here is another, also ours and not tested at scale, written like a caption:
“Currently losing to my niece at Mario Kart, and taking it well.”
It puts you in a scene and leaves what you want to the other fields. It also makes the first message easy; replies to bios like it are under Tinder opening lines.
Third-party guides and a 2016 study put the limit at 500 characters; we could not confirm it in Tinder’s help center (TechJunkie, 2020; Cosmopolitan, 2025; Tyson et al., 2016). Tinder recommends 15 to 45 words, based on its own platform data, which it dates to October 2022 in one release and February 2023 in another, with no method in either (Tinder Newsroom UK, 2023; Tinder Newsroom France, 2023). Its FAQ is looser, suggesting among other things “a reference only the right person will catch” (Tinder, undated).
The fields around the bio, as of October 5, 2026:
| Field | What we found | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | Up to nine, in Tinder’s newsroom wording | Tinder Newsroom Australia, 2024 |
| Interests | Launched as “Passions” in 2020, three to five per profile at launch | Global Dating Insights, 2020 |
| Relationship Goals | Launched December 2022 | TechCrunch, 2022 |
| Prompts and basics | Prompts, a profile quiz and tags for pets, drinking habits, zodiac sign and love language, since November 20, 2023 | Tinder Newsroom, 2023 |
| Descriptors | Counted with bios and Interests in Tinder’s 2025 data; the US lists include communication styles such as “Better in person” and “Bad texter” | Tinder, Year in Swipe 2025 |
Prices and Tinder’s figures on Relationship Goals are on our Tinder page.
An empty bio gets read too. In a Mumsnet thread on what makes people swipe right, started August 21, 2021 with about 33 replies, one poster singled out “the bio that says can’t be bothered with this bit, any questions just ask” (Mumsnet, 2021). What someone can still write to a profile like that is under when the profile gives you almost nothing.
What a bio does on Tinder, and what nobody has measured
Measured. The one test of a Tinder bio we found is from 2016. Tyson and colleagues built 14 test profiles, all but two in London. The three male profiles with stock photos averaged 69 matches from women with a short bio, a greeting and that they were from London, and 16 without one. Of about 480,000 real profiles the team collected, 36% had no bio, and most bios were under 100 characters (Tyson et al., 2016). That compares one line with nothing, ten years ago. Photos weighed most in a 2008 study of dating-site profiles, covered in our guide to best Hinge prompts (Fiore et al., 2008). And in a US lab study of 108 pairs of strangers, randomly assigned to see each other’s profile first or not, the profile amplified what happened when they met (Sharabi, 2020).
Company data. Tinder’s 15 to 45 words is the company’s own figure. The same UK release reports a survey Opinium ran for Tinder of 1,000 UK 18- to 24-year-olds in July 2023: 51% said “a bio stands out when someone gives a bit of insight”, and 30% said bad grammar and spelling gave them the ick (Tinder Newsroom UK, 2023). Tinder says “Looking for” was its top bio mention worldwide in 2024, from its own data on bios, descriptors and interests from January 1 to October 1 (Tinder, Year in Swipe 2024). On photos, users with Smart Photos switched on, which leads with your most-liked photo, saw up to 12% more matches in Tinder’s 2016 testing, with no sample size given (TechCrunch, 2016). In 2024, Tinder said men with more than one face photo were 71% more likely to match with women, an internal Tinder correlation dated only “21 June” (Tinder Newsroom Australia, 2024). None of these comes with a published method.
Vendor claims. One bio-examples page from March 2026 says profiles with a bio get four times as many matches, from about 7,000 profiles its own users uploaded. The same page credits Tinder’s UK newsroom with a figure for how many seconds a profile gets, which we did not find in that release. Other pages name a character-count “sweet spot” with no source, and the two lists of 80 or more bios for men that we read cite no data at all; one sells coaching, the other an AI tool.
Not measured. We found no Tinder statement and no study on whether a bio changes how often Tinder shows your profile. We found no test of funny against plain bios on Tinder; the humor research above is ads, students and conversations. On length, nothing we found goes further than one line beating an empty box.
Our reading: one answerable line, no typos, one joke at most, and let Interests, Relationship Goals and prompts carry the rest.
Is it true that 75% of Tinder users are men?
We found no primary source for it. We found no gender split published by Tinder, and the “75%” and “3 in 4” figures we saw sit on statistics roundup pages that give no source.
In the Ofcom releases we could read, UK online adults using dating apps in May 2024 were 65% men and 35% women across all apps, on Ipsos iris data, and Hinge was the only top-10 service where women outnumbered men, 53% to 47% (Ofcom, 2025). There is no Tinder-only split. Ofcom’s 2025 reach figures for Tinder and Hinge are on best dating apps.
In the US, Pew surveyed 6,034 adults from July 5 to 17, 2022: 34% of men and 27% of women had ever used a dating site or app, and 7% and 3% were using one at the time. Its Tinder chart splits by age and sexual orientation only (Pew Research Center, 2023).
The one Tinder-specific figure we found is secondary. A Statista chart released September 15, 2016 says 67.8% of US Tinder users were male in July 2016, credited to Statista’s research department, with no method we could see (Statista, 2016).
Our reading: Ofcom’s UK data and the 2016 US chart both have men in the majority, and Pew’s rates lean the same way without being a head count. By how much on Tinder, we found no source that says.
How to use this
- One answerable line. A detail or an opinion someone can reply to in a sentence.
- A proofread. In the Dutch dating-site tests above, profiles with language errors were rated less attractive.
- One joke, about something you did. Three stock jokes are the ones the forum threads above mock.
- Relationship Goals and Interests filled in. They say what a short bio has no room for.
- The reply test. Show the bio to a friend and see whether they can name one thing to ask; the test and a template are on dating profile examples.
Common questions
What is a hilarious bio for Tinder?
One joke about something only you did, with room around it. One of ours, not tested at scale: "Learning to parallel park at 31. Moral support welcome; passengers, not yet." In Dutch studies by van der Zanden and colleagues, profile texts rated more original went with writers being rated funnier and smarter (2022), while novelty that turned inappropriate read as odd (2023). The raters were dating-site members, most over 50 in the 2022 study.
What is a good caption for a Tinder bio?
A scene, not an adjective. One of ours, not tested at scale: "Currently losing to my niece at Mario Kart, and taking it well." It is short and gives a stranger something to tease you about. What it does not say is what you want, so it leans on the other fields: Relationship Goals and a few Interests cover what the line does not.
What is a good flirty bio for Tinder?
Light, specific and with a date idea built in. One of ours, not tested at scale: "Fair warning: I will steal exactly one of your fries. Never two. Looking for someone who orders the large." Flirting in text loses tone of voice, which can make a line that charms across a table read as forward from a stranger. Our rule of thumb: keep it playful and leave anything sexual for later.
Is it true that 75% of Tinder users are men?
We found no primary source for it, and no gender split published by Tinder. In Ofcom's UK data for May 2024, users of dating apps were 65% men and 35% women across all apps, with no Tinder-only figure in the releases we could read. Pew's survey of 6,034 US adults in July 2022 found 34% of men and 27% of women had ever used a dating site or app, and it does not split Tinder by gender.
How long should a Tinder bio be?
Tinder suggests 15 to 45 words, from its own platform data, which it dates to October 2022 in one release and February 2023 in another, with no method published. Third-party guides and a 2016 study put the limit at 500 characters; we could not confirm it in Tinder's help center. The only measurement we found, on curated London profiles in 2016, compared a short bio with none, and the three male test profiles with a bio got more matches.
