Dry dating
Dry dating is going on dates without alcohol: coffee instead of cocktails, a walk instead of a wine bar. It is a choice about the date, not about who you are. Sober dating means one of you does not drink, often for a good reason. Dry dating means the plan itself has no drinks in it.

In dating searches, “dry” means several different things, and only one of them involves drinks. This page is about that one, with the others sorted out below.
Signs you are dry dating (and what it is not)
Most dry dates are never announced. The plan just happens to leave no room for a drink.
- You suggested a time when a drink would be odd. Ten in the morning, Sunday lunch, an hour before the market closes.
- The venue has no bar, or the bar is beside the point. The gallery café may sell wine. Nobody came for it.
- Nobody asked “do you drink?” It never came up, because the plan did not need it.
- You can remember the whole date. Including the story about their brother, which will come up again.
The word also gets used for three other things.
Sober dating. One person does not drink at all, often for a good reason. If that reason is recovery, it is their story to tell, and date one is not the moment to ask. A dry date is a decision about one plan. Sober is usually a decision about a lot more.
Dry texting. One-word replies and no questions back. That is a conversation problem rather than a drinks problem, and it has its own page: dry texting.
Dating without sex. The phrase is also used online for holding off on sex early on. Same word, different conversation, and not the one on this page.
Sober date ideas that are not just coffee
Coffee is fine, and it is what everyone suggests. Most of these come with a natural end, which helps when there is no last round to call.
| Idea | Why it works on a first date | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee or tea | Easy to say yes to, easy to leave | Under an hour |
| A walk with a destination | Side by side is easier than face to face | About an hour |
| A market or food hall | Things to point at, and lunch sorts itself out | One to two hours |
| A museum or gallery | Built-in topics, and you learn their taste fast | One to two hours |
| A climbing gym or mini golf | Busy hands, a little competition | About an hour |
| A daytime matinee | Something to discuss afterward, so add a walk | Two to three hours |
| A pottery or cooking class | Someone else runs the agenda | About two hours |
| A bookstore, then a bench | Their picks tell you a lot | About an hour |
| Breakfast | Nobody orders a second round of eggs | Under an hour |
The times are our rough estimates. If one of you drinks, most of these still work, since nobody minds a glass of wine at the food hall.
Why people are drinking less on dates
Partly because fewer people drink at all. In Gallup’s July 2025 poll, 54% of US adults said they drink, the lowest share in the nearly 90 years Gallup has asked (Gallup, 2025). That describes everyone, not daters. But daters come from the same pool, and the apps report the same direction (Tinder, 2022).
The idea also got a name. The sober-curious movement made it normal to question the default drink without quitting altogether, and Dry January brings the question back every year.
Then there are the practical reasons. Coffee costs less than cocktails for two, and it ends sooner if the date is not working. And some people returning from a break caused by dating app burnout come back with new rules, where no drinks on date one is an easy rule to add. Dry dating sits close to slow dating, a pace two people agree on.
What to do about it
- Suggest a plan and leave the rule out of it. “Coffee Saturday morning?” needs no explanation. If you want to mention it, do it once and lightly: “I’m doing dates without drinks these days, hope that’s fine.” A match who says yes without asking why is a small green flag.
- If they order a drink, let them. You are dry. They never signed up for it. Someone who keeps pushing “just one” after you said no is a red flag, and an easy one to spot.
- If you do not drink at all, say so before the date. One line in the chat is enough: “Heads up, I don’t drink, so daytime plans suit me best.” The backstory can wait, possibly forever.
- Pick something that ends by itself. A bar always has one more round. A gallery closes, a walk reaches the river, a class runs out of clay. If the talk stalls first, our first date questions have a few to fall back on.
If it went well, the second date can include wine or not. Starting dry does not commit either of you to staying dry.
What the research says
Most of the evidence is about drinking in general. Very little of it is about dates.
Gallup surveyed 1,002 US adults from July 7 to 21, 2025, with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points (Gallup, 2025). The share who drink was 54%, down from 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023. Among 18-to-34-year-olds it was 50%, down from 59% in 2023, and 53% of adults said moderate drinking is bad for your health, up from 45% in 2024 (Gallup, 2025). These are all US adults, not people on dates.
The dating numbers come from the apps. Tinder’s Year in Swipe release of November 28, 2022 said over 25% of surveyed young singles drank less on dates than the year before (Tinder, 2022). The in-app survey covered 18-to-24-year-olds in the US, UK and Australia from October 18 to 28, 2022, and no sample size is given. The same release said 72% of members state on their profiles that they do not drink or drink only occasionally, and that beer and wine emoji in bios fell 40% and 25% year on year from January to October (Tinder, 2022).
Bumble’s trends list for 2022, which Refinery29 UK covered on November 28, 2021, is the earliest dated use of “dry date” we found. Bumble’s own page, which carries no date, says 34% of its users were more likely to go on one than before the pandemic, with no method described (Bumble, 2021). No dictionary lists the term. Coverage followed: Fox 5 New York ran a Dry January piece with dating coach Connell Barrett on January 9, 2024 (Fox 5 NY, 2024), and NPR’s 1A took up the trend on February 12, 2025 (NPR, 2025).
Read the wording closely. The apps report people drinking less on dates, which is not the same as dates with no alcohol. The claim that dry dates build a more genuine connection is repeated everywhere, and we found no study that tests it.
The only controlled experiment we found asked something narrower. Bowdring and Sayette brought 18 pairs of male friends in their 20s, 36 men in all, into a lab. Alcohol did not change how attractive the men rated people. The ones who had been drinking were, however, substantially more likely to choose to meet the people they rated most attractive (Bowdring & Sayette, 2023). Men only, a small sample, in a lab. Our reading is that alcohol changes who you approach more than what you see. On a dry date, the nerve has to come from the plan.
Common questions
What does dry dating mean?
It means going on dates without alcohol, such as coffee, a walk, a gallery or breakfast instead of a bar. It is a choice about the date, not a statement about who you are, and you can still drink at other times. Sober dating is different, because one person does not drink at all. The earliest dated use we found is in Bumble's list of dating trends for 2022.
What does "dry date" mean?
A dry date is a single date with no alcohol in it. Daytime plans make that easy, such as coffee, a market, a matinee or a class. Nobody has to announce it, and the other person can still order a drink. Bumble said 34% of its users were more likely to go on one than before the pandemic, but it did not say how it measured that (Bumble, 2021).
What does "dry relationship" mean?
It is a different phrase, and it usually has nothing to do with alcohol. People use it for a relationship with little sex, affection or warmth left in it, where the two of you now function more like roommates than a couple. It is not a research term.
What is the difference between dry dating and sober dating?
Dry dating is a decision about one plan: this date has no drinks in it, and the next one might. Sober dating means one person does not drink at all, often for a reason that is theirs to share or not. The plans can look the same, coffee or a walk, but a sober date is not a phase that ends when the second date arrives.
Is it okay to date someone who is sober?
Yes. What changes is the venue, not the person. Pick a place where drinks are not the point, and if you drink, you can still order one. Do not ask why they are sober on a first date. If there is a story, they will tell it when they choose to, and it may not be the one you are imagining.
